Welllll, lets see here. My concern with the 05. Super trucks, no doubt. However , with the mods listed I would be concerned about how it was treated. Was it a mall crawler or a weekend trail warrior or mixture of both. Im always concerned about someone else's mods. Has it been abused with them? Its going to have more room inside than the 3rd gen. It will have less maintenance, no timing belt replacement. Problems with transfer case actuator, expensive repair.

98, awesome trucks. If its family owned it has probably been well maintained. Needs Tbelt every 90k miles. Rear axle seals can be an issue. Not real expensive, but bad enough. Smaller inside. Not quite as good a ride. 3.4 is super engine but not the power of the 4.0. Take the $5500 and spend it the way YOU want to.

We have 3rd and 4th gen. I love them both for different reasons. I had rather drive the 3rd gen most of the time, just because it is how I want it, 4th gen is all stock family ride.

So now you don't know anymore than you did before. Just my experience with both. The 3rd gens right now are getting pretty cultish in their following. 4th gen kinda has a more soccer momish look

Is the 98 auto or manual? If it's manual I say the 98 otherwise I would pass. The auto in that era sucked a lot of power (and vicariously gas) and wasnt super robust.

If you go with the 05 check the milage on the shocks. The higher end stuff may need work. The 4.0 is a solid step up from the 3.4 imo.

$5500 would buy a lot of cool stuff for that 3rd gen, and having the factory locker is a huge plus. Frame rust, however, is a concern, especially in Canada. I vote the 3rd gen on the condition that the frame is in good shape. If you go look at it, pay real close attention to the frame side rear lower link mounts.

I would highly suggest you check out the head gasket thread on the 4th gens on T4r. I neglected to do that had to do a head gasket at 160k miles. the first three years of 4.0 4runners had an old style head gasket that would leak between cylinder 4 + 6. If the coolant has been changed or flushed in its history, then it is probably fine.

Make sure it is cold when you go to test drive it and see if there is any rough idle on startup. Not all of them had issues, but toyota did update the HG after 2005 production date.
