4th gen Rear bumper build-up

Got part of the carrier finished, mainly was working on the latching mechanism

I've had PM's about the latching system, so I compiled all the shots into one image, hope this explains how it works....

I welded a threaded sleeve into the 2x4 tube, screw in the rod end, install the clamp handle and it's held in place with a pull pin.

I did it this way for simplicity and when you remove the carrier, there's only a threaded hole left. If for some reason the lever flips open, no worries about having the carrier swing open.

All the parts were found at McMaster Carr......

98320A613 ZINC-PLATED STEEL RING-GRIP QUICK-RELEASE PIN, 5/8" DIAMETER, 1.3" USABLE LENGTH
90983A223 GRADE 8 ZINC-PLATED STEEL COUPLING NUT, 5/8"-11 SCREW SIZE, 2-1/8" LENGTH, 15/16" WIDTH
2440K27 FULLY THREADED 4140 STEEL ROD END, 5/8"-11 THREAD SIZE, 1-1/4" HEAD DIA, 3-1/2"LENGTH
61525K14 FAST-ACTION CLAMPING HANDLE, 5/8" BORE

just a little update, got too hot today! But I did get the upright for the tire mount aligned, keeping it 2" away from the hatch. reused part of the middle bumper plastic section, trimmed it to fit and then started sheeting in the rest of the bumper. Spent the rest of the time just doing all the welding.....

As for the space between the bumper and body, that will have a custom fiberglass filler piece made to match the wider track of the rear wheels...

latch

Nice Bruce, how bout a piece of "1/8 delrin or some other plastic on the
swing-out where the latch tightens to the swing-out. That way it will make
it easier to close, won't be metal on metal and will be replacable when worn
away.

wow...sorry to resurrect an slightly older thread, but that work is amazing. nice job on the fiberglass. did you do that yourself?

i like the dual swing our tire/gas can carrier. with the latch being metal to metal, do you get any squeaking? very nice work!
