4WD Land Cruiser vs 4Runner

A Land Cruiser with full-time 4WD (open diffs) and a center diff lock will not have the traction performance of a similar rig with part-time 4WD and a mechanical (electric/air etc) locking diff in the rear axle if that matters to you. One example of this would an 80 series Cruiser with open diffs. I've owned one of those. I currently have an 80 series with factory locking diffs and this is best in terms of traction. A 4Runner etc with a locking rear diff will perform better than the center-diff/open setup. However if you're looking specifically at the 200 series Cruiser OR a 4Runner with the new ATrac and Crawl Control it is surprisingly effective even without locking diffs. The crawl control in the 200s is really good. It takes a bit of getting used to keeping your feet off the pedals and the noises that come along with the system, but it works much better than a center-difflock/open diff setup and while not a fully locked system it will work almost as well as a fully locked system in most situations.
