2006 Ford E450 Type 1 Medtec Ambulance 71,000 miles
After completing our year long trip through the US and Mexico, our travel vehicle is up for sale. The Ambulance was bought in 2018 with 46,000 miles and converted into a California registered RV. It was originally custom built as a support vehicle for a volunteer Fire Department in Oregon where it was stored inside and maintained by professional mechanics. We upgraded components to improve reliability and capability in order to withstand long term travel and off road use. The Medtec box, compartments, doors and cabinetry are ridiculously overbuilt, high quality and can be retrofitted with other appliances or accessories for your preferred use. It worked perfectly for our intended purpose.
We had the engine “Bulletproofed,” proactively performing $12,000 worth of preventative engine work by Stroker Diesel in SLC. This included new injectors, new high pressure oil pump, Sinister coolant filter, Sinister EGR delete, Bulletproof water pump, ARP head studs, coolant filter conversion, updated oil cooler, heads checked and cleaned, blue spring kit, IPR screen, new turbo and a long list of updated fittings, gaskets, tubes, sensors and other accessories.
4WD conversion and 6” lift was performed by Advanced 4WD in Salt Lake City

Tires are BFG TA/KO2, were routinely rotated and have ½ life left
Kenwood head unit and (4) 6x9 speakers in Cab

2x 7 gallon propane tanks. You can definitely downsize tanks unless you live in Alaska, we refilled them once in a year even after touring Colorado and the East Coast in the winter and they are still full.

Fabricated a wood bed sliding platform with storage
Removable butcher block countertops
Leather captain chair jump seat that swivels 360, lays flat and has vibration and heat
Curtain for indoor shower on side entrance and tent for outdoor shower
We replaced the convertible couch cushions with a new standard mattress for better long term comfort about a month ago
We used a porta-potti but there is a perfect spot for installing a composting toilet if preferred
The heavy rear bumper was removed and replaced with a tow hitch with motorcycle rack
We built in a sink under the stove platform, and used a dual burner outdoor stove because we typically like to cook outside 95% of the time and wanted an oversize sink. We kept the plumbing as simple as possible for reliability. A side by side stove/sink combo could easily be installed in its place if preferred.
2018 Yamaha Zuma 125cc scooter included in price.
The Fire Department kept up with all maintenance and had records. We changed the oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles and the fuel filter every other oil change due to where we were traveling.
5,000 miles on differential fluid, transfer case fluid, and transmission fluid/filter
New oil, oil filter, fuel filters, coolant filter, alignment, and tire balancing were just performed this week bringing all services up to date.
The bad: The custom ladder was damaged by a low bridge and punctured a couple 1” holes in roof skin. The aluminum skin can be easily repaired by body shop, but since we were touring Mexico, we patched with Sikaflex until we had time to do repairs and had not worried about it since. The roof is still sealed from the elements. There was no damage to side part of ladder and can still be used confidently.
The ambulance is priced at less than half of what we put into it but still open to offers if it doesn't sell quickly.
