4x4 Class C Scotty Serro mobile office/home and adventure rig! Life on Road

Like so many other Expo members I have long dreamed of far off lands travel in my highly outfitted Expo Defender 110 ( I do not own one only dream of it) ... Through the years I have built everything from rock racing off-road buggies- class 11 Bugs, mall crawling Wranglers, Everything including the kitchen sink Toyota based expo rigs... My plan was to one day sell everything and spend a couple of years traveling the Pan American Highway. Doesn't everybody ?

Warning- long post ahead :) Grammar and spelling optional...

My father has always been an adventurer on wheels, perhaps this is where my fascination with living vehicle based and traveling the country spawns from. He would share with me regular magazine articles from this crazy couple who had been doing just that since the 70's ( Turtle Expedition)... I had been hooked since childhood..

Like many others life seemed to get in the way- One day your in high school and the next your sitting in your cubical 15 years later planning your grand Expedition for the weekend. Get off work at 5... Grab your rig that is ready for the apocalypse... Try to cover 800 miles in a weekend.. take 100s of Instagram photos so you can show why you need a RTT, fiberglass propane bottle, ARB everything, and oh dont forget the Exoffico given go boxers designed to be lived in indefinitely...

I am as guilt as the rest.. I love gear! I am also an avid backpacker, not the normal kind either.. See I am a walking contradiction... My Expo rig has every bell and whistle.. Yet I count ounces and chop down my tooth brush to shed weight.. Meh--- Its a sickness I suppose.

At this point your probably trying to figure out what does my title have to do with any of my ramblings.. If your still reading this I thank you and feel free to join my future support group Expo Anonymous!

Enter the Master Plan!!! Version 1:

Sell everything, quit jobs, move into truck and camper, become famous bloggers, live a life of adventure!

Take once work truck and turn it into world traveling Expo rig!
Camper shell with RTT-- This was a nice set up.. But I think I forgot I was afraid of heights.. sleeping in this thing gave me anxiety..

Version 2

Add tiny old Skamper pop up :

This rig was great for quick weekend getaways.. Yet it was small and kind of heavy..

Next Evolution- ( do you see a trend here ? Like I said I like gear )

Brand new shiny Fourwheel Camper - Hawk...

This was the beginning of our rig that would take us to middle earth and back! ( Or so I thought)

We were all set! Throw caution to the wind and head South!

Enter life's reality- I actually love my job. Crazy I know. I work for a leading engineering software firm partner.. My specific role is head of the additive manufacturing team. That is fancy talk for 3D printing...

A new opportunity developed this last year. We need to open up the Northwest or what they call the Northwest ( CO, OR, WA, ID, UT, MT) and they needed a way to get exposure in all those states.
Option one 1: try and find a couple of reps to place in key markets - Denver, Seattle, Boise, or ? The catch is finding anybody with a real understanding of 3D printers at the industrial level.
Option 2: On a regular interval fly one of our reps from Southern CA and have them spend time in each market $$$
Option 3: I volunteer to take on the hardship of traveling recruiter/sales/and trainer. I will forgo my comfortable life 3 miles from the beach.. Leave my HOA who continually sends me nasty letters, abandon my tiny condo that costs ridiculous amounts of money to maintain, and move into:

Introducing Scotty ! A 1996 Scotty Serro 4x4 Class C Motorhome ( holy crap he finally made it to this part)

So here it is ! A class C 4x4 diesel motor home. With only 60,000 miles, and less then 50 hours on the generator. It is in in incredible shape and ready to take us all over the West.

I did make one deal with my traveling partner and love.. She opts for an older 4x4 motor home and we can update the insides to feel like home. Something we both agree is very important considering this will be our traveling home and office. If it was a weekend warrior rig we would have probably left it alone-- :smiley_drive: Who am I kidding- No I wouldn't

The RV world seems to decorate with all the wonderful styling of 15 years ago. So this wonderful rig felt like we were visiting Grandmas house with it's baby blue carpet, light oak ( fake wood) and GOLD............Lots GOOOOOOOOOLLLLLD...

We are in the middle of the inside update- I will post pictures of what we have so far..

First a quick run the coast to test out the rig and make sure all systems work properly :

Fellow BAD *** CAMPER -

Maiden voyage went off without a hitch. Driving a 25 foot RV is not to bad. I had the pleasure of my first black water tank dumping. :) We also experienced our first night stealth camping.. Not an easy task in Orange County. After chatting it up with a few "obvious" full timers we learned of the Beachfront RV lifestyle.

Many have chosen to live the life of a beach bum. Only they do so in their RVs. Some are luxurious class A motor homes and others living in a cargo van. They purchase a state pass. Arrive each morning at 6 AM ( beach opens) and stay until 10 PM. Then they retreat to their personal hidden spots for the night. Why pay a 1,000,000 bucks for condo with a view ?

Testing out the kitchen while I BBQ some burgers

From what I gather we averaged 15 mpg.. I have read other getting 17 mpg but I dont expect those numbers as we will also be towing our 06 unlimited. We should be in your neck of the woods around March. Would be great to meet up and go on a big girl adventure.

Great job evaluating all the options! We are dreaming of something similar... We are also blessed with a 3 y/o at the moment who makes the decision and logistics slightly more complicated. I think the hardest part for us is determining how big of a rig we want to manage/pay for.

I look forward to following your adventures.

Ward, your build has been my daily dose of inspiration! We should absolutely plan a "plus size" meet and greet somewhere in the Northwest or cough-cough Alaska :)

Butch, Congrats on the little co-drive and small hands mechanic ! I follow so many blogs at the moment that include having children. You read the little ones are very adaptable and love life on the road. Why? because they get something most kids don't- Mom and Pops time all the time. So many look for the perfect time to leave... the right amount of nest egg, the right season. I have done that for so many years. I finally picked a date and marked it on the calendar.I began telling all my family the date. Now I am commited or I am a liar :) .

I have also read most wish they got a smaller rig. I think if you focus on what are your must haves.. The rig will find you.

For us it was
4x4- (wish) or it was going to visit Chris at Ujoint / White feather if Sprinter based
sub 25 feet ( fits in almost all campgrounds)
4 season - this is debatable as 4 season is very objective ( this unit has indoor tanks, heating vents inside the cabinets, and heat pads on all tanks)
indoor shower/bathroom - wet bath would be an acceptable option ( not ideal)

Our original idea was a Provan Tiger - But these are few and far between. New is $$$ Shortbus adventure on this forum has an awesome follow along post. You really get to see one of these used over time.

Awesome rig! I'll be reading along and looking forward to the big girl meetup.

It will be a blast.. Probably the slowest Expedition covering feet and feet of rough terrain.( un even Walmart parking lots). But when we finally stop - 42 plasma TV.. AC..Margaritas...Cable... You can keep your boil in a bag, titanium Snow Peak meals.. I baking M/f cookies in the oven!
