So I just traded my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon for a 2016 4Runner TRD pro.

The PO really rigged it out nice but did not do dual battery set up. Since he moved the spare to the rear carrier I have a ton of real estate under the back of the 4Runner and that got me to thinking why not mount the 2nd battery there?
I know there are kits to add a second battery to the right hand location as well as mounting it up against the firewall on the passenger side. The problem I see with these is fatigue on the sheet metal over time especially with a larger group 31 or so battery.

The question is; is this a good idea or am I crazy? Has anyone done this?

I have a 24f AGM (leftover) that I was planning on using, but would make the tray able accept some different sizes.
Also I have a Ctek 250SA dual that I was going to use on the Jeep’s secondary set up that I will use to take care of any voltage drop going that far to the rear of the vehicle. I am thinking I will mount it in the cab somewhere, maybe one of the cubbies in the cargo area.

Let me know what you think. I had this brain fart at work so I can’t even look at it to see if I even have the room.

On my old 4th Gen I ran the second battery over the rear of the right passenger well for 10+ years without any issues.

FYI on the CTEK 250 unit. Great unit. It has 3 internal 30 Amp fuses. Also beware of the max voltage limits.

Good to know on the CTEK. Thanks!
I ended up ordering the offgrid engineering aux battery tray that sits passenger up against the firewall.

I like how they used all of the existing bolts and panel nut locations. They should have gone one step further and designed it to space the battery an inch closer to the engine and provide clearance for the hood strut. Please post some install pix when you are done.
