5th Gen 4runners: Does Your Engine Compartment Look the Same?

Hey Folks, I picked up a GX460 and I know it shares a lot of it's frame and suspension stuff with the 5th gen 4Runners. I'm shopping for a dual battery mount/tray and I started comparing the 5th gen setups and seeing if they would work for me. I know its different engines (V6 vs V8) but it appears everything is pretty much in the same spot. My GX has the smog/SAI pump in the front passenger side so I was considering the Shrockworks battery kit but reading through the instructions; where I would relocate the smog pump to, I already have "stuff" there.... I was hoping to put the second battery in the front passenger side where the fender is already reinforced. I attached a few pictures in hopes of help. I looked at the Prado 150 setups but they all have completely different engine setups (diesels). Do the 5th gen 4Runners have the hoses in the back passenger side near the firewall?

Very similar, I mounted my 2nd battery where the smog pump is located. Looks the same as yours. I used the shockworks kit which went in very easy. If you reach out to shockworks they should be able to tell you if it will work.

Ouch, that looks tight, looks similar to a tundra engine compartment. Looks like a lot more stuff then the 5th gen compartment. Can you fit 2 batteries side by side in the stock battery location?

I ended up doing that, replacing the original group 27 with a pair of smaller batteries in my Tacoma.

Engine bays for the GX, 4Runner, Tacoma, FJC are all sort of similar but there are so many variations. I wanted to put the 2nd battery on the passenger's side by the firewall, which is where a lot of people put it, but my configuration has a traditional brake booster and that means the ABS actuator sits there and I didn't want to mess with moving that. It's an octopus of plumbing.

So this is what it looks like.

This was one of my options also. I have to do some better/careful measurements and see if I can stuff two group 24 batteries (or similar) in the stock location. I may have to break out the cardboard and get crafty.

@DaveInDenver Did you have to extend your negative cable to get it to reach forward?

Patrick,

Yes, I made up a few. New are 2AWG primary power and ground cables from the battery to the starter and engine block (on the 1GR-FE the block ground is a bolt behind the starter). I also made a couple of new 2AWG ground cables that connect the battery to the body and frame.

Strictly speaking in this orientation the power cable probably would have worked fine but the grounds would not.

Also those are Odyssey group 34/35 pair, so each is smaller than a group 24 and the combination of both ends up an inch or two larger than a group 27. It's snug and not lightweight.
