6.5 or 454?

yea the heads do seem like they might be a good idea, and the better flow should increase my mpg atleast a little. I was also maybe looking at a 6bt 12v for a swap but im not sure how big a pain that swap would be. I just dont want to get started on a swap and have it take months with the truck out of commission the whole time.

Better late than never is what I always used to say lol :coffeedrink:

HA! I have no issues with a 6.2/6.5L diesels l but I am not going backwards in the reliability department with this truck so 8.1L will remain in the K10. I would definitely consider a 6.5L diesel for my ’89 Polar Bear Suburban though but I have 2 L18 8.1L’s, 1 L29 7.4L and zero 6.5L diesels lying around. It is much cheaper to use what is already in stock rather than go engine shopping. On the other hand, the next potential engine project for the big blue K10 (or Suburban) would be a 2014 6.2L direct injected gas engine as GM Powertrain is talking big block toque in a small block package. If I can get my hands on some through work at a reasonable price I’ll grab one or two to play with. I was one of the first to do a 8.1L swap into and old chassis so I would look forward to being one the first to do a 6.2L DI swap into an older chassis as well. The ’89 Polar Bear Suburban would be a great donor for such a project.

92burbanAZ, any Cummins would be a worthwhile swap over a big block gas anyday depending the cost of admission. You can buy a lot of gas for the cost of doing a “real” diesel engine swap like a Cummins. GM 6.5L diesels are just an appetizer to the real thing (Cummins 5.9L). Us cheap guys just go for high torque big block gas engines instead. You can buy a lot of gas for the cost of a diesel swap.

If I was going to swap I would find a 12 valve Cummins. My .02. That's a swap that would be worth the trouble. IMO

Well; on this we agree. IMO a 12valve would be worth it for a truck you plan on keeping a long time. There have been many swaps like this, should not be hard to get a quote. I bet it could be done for 4k-ish
