I've done plenty of ''in chassis overhauls''. I felt that every single one was lower quality than removing the engine, and getting it on a stand where I could spin it over by hand. And those were semi trucks. Far easier to access.

Check with Earthroamer. With as much thought, and cost, that they put into them, I'd imagine that the camper box removes as easy as a freight box so that you can slide a new ''glider kit'' in whenever.

It does seem silly of Ford to design such that the cab needs to be removed to do major work on the motor. It's a work truck in essence, not a supercar.

But, it's only a matter of a couple hours of work to get it off IIRC - then you have total unimpeded access to the motor. In the grand scheme of things, if you're having major work done, the cab removal labor is a small part of the cost.

Removing the cab takes less time and effort than trying to do it the "old fashioned way" and causes far fewer busted knuckles. When we dropped a new long block in my step brothers truck it took about two hours for the two of us to lift the cab off the frame. It made the job soooooo much easier.

My worry would be the lack of machine work on the block and the ability to clean it if its not removed and sent off to be done properly.

I do not believe it is possible to remove the cab on the earth roamer to do major engine work, although technically you probably can, you will pay out the ass in labor to do it. Work on the ford that requires cab removal will have to be done the old fashioned way, which probably translates into increased labor costs. I am sure if an Earthroamer pulls into a mechanic shop they will be seeing dollar signs once they find out how much one costs.

There have been a number of ERs who have done rebuilds or other major work on their truck. While most dealerships prefer to have the cab removed, it's not feasible to do so. All of the ERs that I know of (with one exception) that have done major engine work did so with the cab on. It does add somewhat to labor, as there is a lot that has to be removed so you can get the motor out. It's expensive to have the camper pulled off the frame, at least if Earthroamer does the work.

I know of a guy with a 6.7 Earthroamer. He finally sold it and the new owner called and said the engine blew at 70K. It had been meticulously maintained and rarely offroad. $22K was the bill. Ouch.

That's only 4% of the new vehicle cost. I think someone who buys a half mil vehicle can afford it.

There are several PS specialists here in Tennessee that can easily remove the cab from Ford truck in 45 minutes or less for engine repairs. They know what to leave in place and what to remove. Pretty amazing process to see how quickly they can do it. Labor wise removing the cab from the chassis results in significantly LESS total job cost for labor to the owner for the repair's or upgrade's needed on their PS engine than attempting to complete the repairs with cab on the chassis.

That said the PS trucks they repair are not ER's with part of the camper shell hanging over the cab.
