Ditto.

So would the preference be to -

A) Meet in one area, form a base camp of sorts for a long weekend and just do some day trails, returning to the same camp each night?

or

B) Meet up and do a multi-day run, staying somewhere different each night?

I was about to PM ntsqd about this, but thought I might as well put it out here for more input.

Second the motion.
Either mode is fine with me.

How do people camp in this group?

Personally - the further away from anything/everything the better. The closer to the hot springs the better - depending on where it's located. The less rules the better. And since this won't be solo exploring - good people, good food make me a happy camper :)

The more self contained the better. If people need BLM camp sites/toilets then that seriously limits the choices. If people want cabins/motel/B&B that limits potential locations.

Burning Man (type it in on Google Earth - amazing)
Guano Valley (fun little tour)
Hart Mtn (Hot Springs, artifacts, kayak, tour
Sheldon National Antelope Refuge (vast empty area)
Pueblo Mtns (old mines, exloring, archeology)
Steens (snowed in until July)
Alvord Desert (fun exploring, hot springs, mines)
Trout Creek Mtns (fun exploring, hot springs, ??)
Hot Springs Range (need to get there some day)
Owyhee's (incredible exploring but mostly private)
I'm sure I'm missing a few good areas

If it's a long weekend only one location would really work, then day trip in/out, have fun, go home.

I have not spent enough time in any of these places (including the 24 years of work/play in the Steens/Alvord area) to get tired of exploring. 90% of it does not require 4x4, just high clearance and good judgment. I'd like to explore Sheldon NWP in more detail, I've heard great things about it and have never spent anytime off pavement exploring.

I'd like to be in

Great Basin area is good for me, I have some work to do first, but this might give me a deadline. Might want to think about posting on ih8mud, might find some more interested parties, or somebody else that also knows the area.

OK, now that we're mostly through the Holidays I thought it time to get this rolling again.

I should make something clear that I don't think that I've managed to do yet. I do not intend to be a tour guide, event manager, or trip leader. This is an "Event of Consensus", but for that to work it requires that every participant commit to it. Simply subscribing to follow along isn't enough, we need people to be active and to take the lead on whatever appeals to them.
If there isn't enough commitment the event will fail.

I see the necessary sequence being first to choose a destination, but I'm not going to decree it, democracy rules. Then to choose a set of dates, again democracy rules. Then the rest of the things that normally happen on a trip like this will have a frame to work off of. Once we have the first two things in place I will start a new thread in trip planning.

Decisions

So in order to get a consensus you should set it up as a poll using the top locations stated so far. Then we can really nail it down and move on to the next step. Second, I think that somebody is going to have to be the unofficial trip leader wheter we like it or not, somebody has to kind of run things.

I'm willing to steer & try to keep things going in a successful direction. Beyond that it's a group endeavor.

So far we have these suggestions (duplicates removed):
Burning Man
Guano Valley
Hart Mtn
Sheldon National Antelope Refuge
Pueblo Mtns
Steens
Alvord Desert
Trout Creek Mtns
Hot Springs Range
Owyhee's

Perhaps now is the time to move to a Planning Thread & include a poll?
Also, KC's question never got a response. My initial concept was of a stationary camp with voluntary day trips about the area, but I am not opposed to a new camp each evening. This needs group input and a group decision, and soon.

Burning Man would be hard to work. Besides, I doubt you guys really want to see me walking around naked.

My own preferences

I think that a stationary camp might make for a better Meet-n-Greet experience so I'm in favor of that even though my own style is more to move camp each night.

In my own research the Sheldon NWR & Steens Mtn areas look like the most interesting to me.

I have a potentially competing Spring trip in the early planning stages. I would expect that most folk's calendars will be starting to fill up as well, so a date needs to be chosen fairly soon. What the date should be will depend on where we're going. Based on BlueHTZ60's experience in the area it does not sound like early Spring is viable for the Steens Mtn area.

The Owyhees are getting hammered by snow right now. I would expect them to open late May/early June if this continues. This would be a great place to meet though. It would be real easy to coordinate an evening at the historic Idaho Hotel for a formal type dinner and there is plenty of casual camping around the Silver City area. Silver City could be a base camp of sorts with several options for some day trips. Or it could be a meeting spot for a day with a launch to Leslie Gulch or the Bruneau/Jarbridge area.

I can't commit to attending this event but if the Owyhees were the chosen location I could lay out some possible itineraries. My 60/80 project is going much slower than I anticipated. It has been too cold to work outside over the holidays and I have a new little guy 7 months who is competing for and winning my attention. If I get it done I'll try my best to get there provided I don't have a competing event or activity (Cruise Moab, Rubithon, or Art Shows). All of the locations sound interesting to me.

I would love to be a part of something like this. I'll stay tuned for updates. If the time comes, and I can help out in any way, lemme know.

I'm watching this thread and would be interested in attending. Worst thing about buying an 80...... neglecting to tighten up the 60. This would be an event that would inspire a highway/trail ready 60.
"Honey, I'm gonna fix up the cruiser you keep nagging me to sell...."
She'll love that! (it looks better in pictures anyway...right?).
