I have been away from this forum for some time now . I am back and have sold my blazer:victory: and frantically looking for a replacement , as the 88' honda is not working out for me .
I noticed that the 98 ext taco's only have a 6 Foot box lenght , so that means that my sleeping under a canopy is going to be dificult since I am 6'3" tall .
Are there any solutions ? ie: maybe a soft topper with an extention ?

Thanks for the feed back ,and it is nice to be back on this forum . :wavey:

Sleep diagonally. Most people don’t sleep stretched out anyways; my cousin and I spent a cold and extremely windy night in the back of my old Taco on the Havasu rim and he’s 6’4”.

The other thing you could do is get one of those tents that goes on the back with the tailgate dropped.

The bed length of a long bed Toyota is 7 feet. Problem is they stopped bringing them here in 1992 (I don't know they even made them beyond 1995 anywhere else, either). FWIW, the mattress in a WilderNest is just longer than 6 feet, too. I'm just beyond 6' and my feet and head touch with the tailgate closed, so if I sleep in the bed of my truck, I end up a little sideways. That is OK if you're by yourself, but add a second person and that becomes something of a problem. My $0.02 is to do the WilderNest or Flip Pac route, otherwise look for a nice '92 or older long bed pickup.

I sleep stretched out too. I'm only 6', and the bed is a bit too short for my comfort. Diagonal is okay, assuming there isn't any gear sharing the bed with me!

BTW, you should go drive a Taco. Mine is right at the limit for comfortable driving, and if I was any taller, I'd look for another vehicle! The new gen Taco, while huge compared to my '02, seems just as vertically cramped to me. Might want to look at an 8' bed Tundra.

yep , i think my tacoma idea isn't going to work out . the bed length is just not long enough .
I will look into a Tundra , but they get a little too pricey and rare around here .
I may have to go with another domestic , most likley a Silverado , but I don't want to . Hmmm...... what do to what to do .
i figure out something .

BTW , a truck bed tent is a great idea , except I don't want to have to break down the tent every day when I leave camp . And I don't like tents .

cool idea , but i think that I would rather have a tent on the ground because I could easily leave camp with out having to disasemble the tent .
Thanks for the info though . :D

I honestly think that I will have to wait before I buy a new rig , since now I need something bigger and that will cost more $$$$ , and I am in the middle of changing careers , so a loan is not too smart .
Any one ever out fitted a car for expo travel .. Ha ha ha .

Gotcha :D

Sounds to me like you need to look into an older 4Runner or maybe even an old Subie wagon.

Personally, I would not let if you can lay down fully extended in the bed make the decision about what truck to get.

There are enough other sleeping solutions out there.

Have you actually laid down in one? I am sure the salesman may look at you funny, but hey...you needa know, right?

I knew someone was gonna say that. Actually we threw all of the gear in the cab and each kinda took a side. It wasn't ideal, but it was so darn windy (and cold, it was early March) that night that I had no intentions of trying to set up the tent. I usually just sleep back there by myself.

The thing about sleeping in the bed has always sounded pretty cool to me but hasn't worked out. I put too much crap back there to pull it out a sleepy time. I just chuck the tent and call it quits. I don't have a topper nor will I get one soon, maybe way down the road. For right now, I am real happy with my bed cover. I like the way it looks, it's light and I get great visibility out the back window. The only thing I would really suggest is @ 6'3 the drivers seat might be a little tight for ya on a Taco. But as far as the bed goes, that wouldn't effect me at all.

Speaking of Subies, I spent several nights in the back of my Forester on a 9-day desert expedition. A wind storm in Anza Borrego's Coyote Canyon destroyed my tent!

The back of the Forester was just barely long enough for my 6', sleeping diagonally, and with extra clothing filling the gap between the rear seat folded down, and the front passenger seat folded forward.

It couldn't be any worse than the (S-10) Blazer he had, I wouldn't think. But it really sounds like bigger may be the way to go for him, all things considered, if he felt snug in the drivers seat of the Blaze too.

KC has had good success with his T100 and the Tundras are nice, but that is the conundrum...they are more expensive...at least the Tundras.

The T100's are a little cheaper, but pretty hard to find, from what I have seen, in the config that would be optimal for Exped. travel.
