Very nice find! Where did you come up with that? A little freshening up and that will be a fantastic expo rig! :smiley_drive:

wow

What a beauty...No mention of what you paid for it, but I'm sure it was less than the $37K 2010 Toyota 4Runner TE I looked at two days ago.

Pull maintenance, put on a new air filter, flush out the radiator, new tires, belts and hoses and I'm sure she'd take you to the end of the World and back.

OOOH... I also see those vigilante valve covers...

Why doesn't anyone give engines cool names?

It is beautiful, I would be nervous about banging it up. Well, maybe you're a better driver than I. I can't wait to see it after a little love and tenderness. Good Luck.

The Story?

Well after surfing on Expedition Portal I started looking for a camper project and found a little ad on Craigslist. No photo (always put a photo!)
Called the guy and he said he wasn't positive on the year but had 137,000miles and a Alaskan camper. I asked about the camper condition and he said it was perfect, asked about the Jeep and said its clean well I didn't buy the story. Sounded like the Little Old Lady and she only drove it to church. :smiley_drive: So the NEXT day (almost missed it) I went and took a look and about pooped my pants when he opened the garage door! This has been sitting in a garage for y e a r s. Got it home and started looking it over and just could not believe the 137000 because the seat, dash, tires, peddles were almost new. Found a log from the original owner and receipts showing mileage at service and the OD reads 13,750 not 137,500! Back in the day they went 999,999 and back to 000,000. To be fair it wasn't his truck and it was packed tight in the garage and hard to get to.

Anyway she is a survivor. All original 1966 J3000, 327 Vigilante, 3 on the tree, 4x4. The Original owner must of dreamed about buying this rig for a while and then never really got a chance to use it. The log shows trips to the Grand Canyon and a few other places. I think I will continue the log and put at least a few road trips in his memory.

So far I replaced the plug wires, rebuilt the carb, new battery and she started right up. Now on to the brakes & other fluids. She needs a new fuel filler tube and tires are flat spotted. Believe it or not I haven't even washed her yet! I gently hosed off the mtr. The plan is to keep her stock, just clean and fix what needs attention and run her for a while. This should be fun. I will keep a ear out for a proper home in the future because I am out of room and can't park her indoors or on the street. She is a museum piece and should be in someones collection as is (maybe a bit cleaner) The guys at ifsja.org have been a great help sourcing spare parts.
