7.3 PSD durability?

I have an '01 F250 w/ 7.3 and even though it is for sale right now, they are very good engines compared to alot of my friends that have had problems with the 6.0's. I will be looking for an Excursion with a diesel as soon as I sell my F250 so I can keep the same drivetrain but add a little more room for the girls
The thing about all the diesel motors is that they are 300K mile motors that are surrounded by 100K mile parts, like alternators, turbos, wiring, trannies, etc...If you keep any truck for 300K miles be prepared to do a little more than regular maintenance as the parts around the motor are the ones you will be replacing

What body style of PSD are you after? If you don't mind the 94-97 body they can be had for very cheap and finding the ZF 5 speed manual isn't too hard either. Also in the early years lean towards the F350's so you get that--oh so beefy--solid beam Dana 60 front axle :coffeedrink:
The 7.3's are an incredible engine but like anything they can be neglected and mistreated. With buying any used diesel definatly try and get it to a shop and have it looked over. A comperssion test and fuel pressure test should be done. Replacing an injector pump or engine long block will ruin any good deal you find on a cheap truck.

That's a really good point and very well said. That's true about alot of comercial grade diesel's. Personaly I'd rather have a Doge and the Cummins, but I do like the the looks of the older and last gen Super Duty's and the reputation of the 7.3 PSD. I drove a 6.0 for quite some time and while it was a hot-rod with the 6spd it did end up being a troubled motor. My friends previous 7.3 (that he traded on the 6.0 like an idiot) was in literaly the same last gen SD body but was SO much more reliable. As someone else said too, the older body style came with the good'ol D60 where as some of teh SD's come with the not so hot D50. Something to note, the newest edition of Petersen;s has a bolt in F450/550 SUPER 60 write up thaty would be bolt in to any of the newer gen Super-duty's.
As far as Full-size's go, I think that an Excursion with the 7.3 and the 6spd would be a SWEET truck if size is not an issue for the terrain you're running in. Throw in a Stakk multi ratio T-case or hell even two transmissions, some of those Portal tech Portal's with big Michy Millitary tires and you'll have your self a little "domestic MOG" if you will. I think that'd be a sweet rig

I drove both the F350 and the F450 Fords for the BLM in fire truck form. Those trucks will take a lot more punishment than you think. I never remember having an engine problem that wasn't caused by stupidity....lighting the air box on fire and sucking all that crap through the turbo. The truck still didn't die.
On another note. Keep an eye out for the truck you want. I looked for a bit before I found my Dodge, and it wasn't even close to cherry, but I paid $2k for it.
