80 series owners...Post up your miles per gallon

We just returned from a long trip, mostly road driving, and after spending way too much $$$ on gas. I am curious to see what everyone is getting for gas mileage. I know 80s are not known or purchased for their gas sipping abilities, so that doesn't need to be discussed. But I am curious to see what everyone is getting on average.

Please also add if you have a rack or Roof-top tent.

Thanks.

So...I will start.

With tent I am now getting about 10-11 mpg.

I've found that if you drive the 80 like it's carbureted; drive it with the throttle position no further than to reach your desired speed and then ease off slowly and incrementally just to maintain speed, you can do almost 5+mpg difference. I know someone will tell me that's crazy-talk and the ECU with injection should be able to make that moot. Alas I still find the carb-style driving does better on the 1FZ-FE.

Okay, so I range wildly between 10 and 16 mpg, with rooftent.

'92FJ80 on 33's with stock gears. I run a basket on the roof, quite often havea canoe or kayak on there too.

I seem to get around`12mpg if I'm taking it easy going no more then 60mph on the highway. I drive similar to what Scott is saying and use very gradual throttle inputs. In a headwind, traveling above 60 or 65mph my mileage drops below 10. My worst recorded yet was 7mpg driving freeway in a strong headwind in eastern Montana. Most around town driving I get about 9-10mpg. The other interstingthing that I've noticed is that the canoe or a loaded roof basket, or even towing my boat(small boat 15 footer) makes no noticeable difference in my mileage as long as I stay under 60mph.

Interesting anectode: took an old-school Sunday drive (literally) to see some sights for a day in the 80, speed really low between maybe 20 and 45 maximum on some back roads, a few short stops, but just a real mild drive. 20-21 mpg. This was a few years ago before the rooftent.

Drove to Steamboat `normally' that next weekend and got 12-13.

Looks like the roots of the Cruiser are quite true in that it's not at home on the highway, rather the back roads and slow speeds.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I have/am considering downsizing to 265/75's vs my 285/75's which I know would help with the mpg.

And I totally agree with the driving speed...in Baja, where speed limits are about 50 mph, I was getting 16-17 with a rack (no tent).

No roof top tent, no roof basket, and 285s.

I usually try to drive like there's an egg between my foot and the pedal. I typically get 12-14 around town, 14-17 on the highways.

Between 10-13 mpg. with a roof top tent and a gas station up top :)

On the freeway i don't ever break 63mph.

I've been playing around going with 285's also.

What type of mileage do 80 owners get with a diesel motor? I think that Toyota fitted the 3B engine to this model. I'm toying with the idea of buying an 80 for my personal use and doing a diesel conversion

I'm not aware of any 3B going into an 80 from the factory (due in part to mfg years) although I know one person in particular is considering that exact swap. More likely the 1HZ and 1HDT engines?

Yeah Martyn, i'm pretty sure Scott is right. Your probably thinking of the engines he mentioned in a 81 series.

Yes Scott is correct the 1HZ and 1HD 4.2 Liter I-6 went into the series 80 Land Cruisers from 1994-1997 in Australia, possibly Canada??

13.25 mpg... With a super charger, bored 40 over, 315's, 4.88's, roof rack w/ Hella 4000's.

With me in the seat not loaded for a trip my 80 weighs 6250...

35's, 4.88's, eezi awn 1600, loaded for camping or not

10.5 - 13mpg

And I drive really light footed and keep the speed down and I may see a 1-2 mpg increase if I'm lucky.

Partly copied from a similar thread on IH8MUD:

Vehicle:
1996 FZJ80

Mods:
ARB Front
Kaymar Tyre Jockey
OME 3" Heavies
285/75/16 BFG AT/KOs on OEM alloys

Average mpg:
12.5-13.5 mpg, 95% freeway (65-70 mph)

If I drive ~55mph, consciously avoiding rapid acceleration, I get closer to 15-16 mpg.

Notes:
When I tow my 2,300 lb. tent trailer, I get 12.5 mpg, because I'm doing 50-55 mph the whole time, and the savings from reduced speed is offset by the towing weight, so I literally get the same mileage towing as I do when I'm commuting.

Roof tent brings me down to ~10-11 mpg @65 mph highway conditions.

In conclusion: I need a Tercel.

Loaded to the gills (nearly 7K) RRT 35's 4:88's 12.5 MPG drive under 50 MPH and I can get up to 14.5 MPG

Unloaded seems to make no difference, even with or without RTT average 12.5-14.5 MPG

Off highway Approx.. 9-10 MPG

On the Alaska Cruiser Trek 4 MPG :Wow1: (as did three other 80's on that trip, due to high RPM low range and deep mud)

I buy all my gas/oil and 80 parts with American Express at least I can get points and flyer miles out of the deal :wings:

Unless you can increase the MPG X 2 - it hardly seems worth trying to make a difference
