Folks,

Thank you for visiting. Just got my "pop top tent" on my "80 series Land Cruiser". Look over the pictures, and give me your thoughts. The "roof top tent" can be accessed via the sun roof, and a ladder from the back of the cruiser. I will build a similar rig for all interested. This provides a semi-permanent solution. 1 minute
to open up, and crawl into bed. http://80seriespoptop.blogspot.com

Very clever. The only shortcoming I see is awkward rear hatch or sunroof ingress and egress.

I would also like to see a better mounting option than the turnbuckles. Something sturdier would be better IMHO.

Thanks for the reply....to answer your statement: The entry via sunroof is a novelty more or less, but works all the same. Entry via the back door with a ladder is the primary source of entry.

mounting also includes: 12 1/4 in rivet nuts are the primary mounting process, and the turnbuckles only keep the side to side motion anchored. Any suggestions ?

Its not the best picture but the larger "plate" gutter mounts similar to the bajarack or yakima would look cleaner and hold better. They would pinch the gutter as opposed to the sandwiching action of a turnbuckle. Also I'm still imagining a flush mount and not suspended like the bajarack. Obviously this is just helpful and positive criticism, I think the idea is awesome and would like to see more on some cruisers.

What is the inside (usable) length? I have to advise you that the above pic is a really BAD way to market your product - it makes the tent look too small and the foot room non-existent.

Why did you decide to make the top hinge at the front? You lose so much interior volume compared to a horizontal top, and it sure looks like you couldn't sit upright and get dressed in there.

Rear entry doesn't make sense on a Series 80 because of the hatch and spoiler, and sunroof entry doesn't make sense because lots of guys have theirs sealed shut due to inevitable leaks and the $500+ replacement cost of a new glass and seal. Plus no-one wants to climb on the seats, especially while wearing boots.

I have a '96 LX450 and wouldn't consider your tent - I think it has too many serious design limitations compared to a proven Maggiolina:

I wouldn't recommend direct mounting on the roof to anyone - it will destroy the paint pretty quickly due to abrasion on rough roads, and moisture will collect there. You need airflow and clearance. Also, direct mounting won't work on a truck with factory rails.

Have you posted at the IH8Mud Series 80 forum? ... http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/

What is the weight?

Can you describe the construction and materials?

What is the price? Nobody is going to consider a product that doesn't have a price listed. If you could seriously undercut a Maggiolina, you would probably find some buyers.

Sorry for the negative comments, but you did ask.

seems like it could be a squeaker, with two items not meant to mate together. also, being able to access through the sunroof, how does that work with it being the bed floor? i know it wouldn't work for me, i'm short, so getting in from the sunroof would be far more difficult than a ladder. also don't like the sideways A shape. the idea is neat, to keep from being a brick on top of a brick, but i've found my maggi doesn't affect my mileage, so i wouldn't purchase it for myself. would be better fuel mileage vs/ the soft tents though

Gas mileage is 15mpg . This is on the ugly prototype. The finished product will be in aluminum. Seals great no leaks or squeaks
as for sitting up and moving around no problem. Rear egress is preferred "see ladder entry in one of many videos" Pop Top Tent
