80 Series V8 conversion.

Christo is working on his bolt in Toyota V-8 swap as we speak. Gary W. was working on his 45 at Slee's shop and now that it's completed they're working on Christo's.

If you read Gary's thread linked above you'll see a few clues that this swap for an 80 is going forward. I can't wait.

I've installed a Vortec into a FJ80 before. It was a nightmare and I wouldn't recommend it without completely replacing the transmission as well. The A440F (stock '88-92 Land Cruiser trans) is a really old school style power sucking trans and it is not particularly strong (at least for towing with a V8). I'd say the same goes for a Cummins too. Specter sells the parts to bolt in the clutch pedal conversion if going to manual trans.

I would DEFINITELY go with a manual (H55F, NV4500) if doing that swap.

Forgive my ignorance... is the A440 the auto or 4spd manual? I have only ever had BJ60s with the 5spd. H55F I believe. On that note, is it a lot easier to V8 a 60? I am shopping now and would love an 80, but having owned a couple of 60s I am torn. This will be my toy so it does not need to be a great highway rig.

A440 is an auto and very good trans but a power hog.

I have a FJ60 with a TBI 350 and a FJ40 with a TPI 350 and the hardest part of a conversion is the wiring. IMO

This thread just popped up on Ih8mud.

FJ80 + 2UZ + R150F

This is exactly what I'm dreaming of, although I don't know where the tranny came from. I think it might be from a 4R/Taco? Anyone confirm?

Yep, it's a mini-truck tranny...it is however a typicaly Toyota-esque overbuilt unit. the r150 I thought was behind the 22RE-T or maybe that was the R151, either way they're very strong tranny's although I don't know how they'd hold up to Towing and a 2UZ, heat is a killer no matter what tranny you run so amoem sort of added cooling is absolutely nessescary. The H55 was certainly ment for bigger heavier trucks, but the R150 series has been used behind many many high horse power motors I think even some of Ivan's trucks???

Cheers

The guy who started the thread said he makes custom bellhousings and flywheels for manual conversions behind Toy/Lex V8s.

I wish I was in a position to do this swap now, I would give him a ring. But that would be putting the cart WAY before the horse.
