'87 defender

hello folks, land rovers are uncharted territory for me so I figured I'd get some thoughts here. I recently sold my fj40 and have been on the lookout for another but an opportunity for a defender 110 recently came up. My brother is stationed in Germany and returning soon and has spotted a really nice looking 1987 defender 110 for sale $12k close to the base. From what I hear as long as its 25 yrs old there is no problem bringing it to the states and getting it titled, registered, etc? Owner says it has a 200tdi and lt77 gearbox which doesn't mean much to me other than it's a diesel with a manual trans. My brother is going to go check it out for me this week, anything in particular he should be looking for? Owner claims its rust free and in perfect condition but I've heard that before....
I should have some pics to judge after he checks it out.

200tdi won't get into the country. Needs to be as original as possible to be legal for import. Original running gear, engine, etc. Head over to defendersource.com to read all about it in more detail!
