87 Suburban 4x4 3/4T Project

Hey Expeditioneers!

I have a 1987 3/4T Suburban that has seen a pretty tough life over the past 15 years. My Pop's picked her up in '95 and we've had her ever since. It's been used primarily as a yard truck for the last 5-6 years and has really gotten beat up. The frame and body are pretty rusted and the rear wheel wells have started rotting out. Other than that shes starts and runs well but she needs alot of work, and for some reason I have a wild hair up my *** and plan to tackle this project. However I don't know much about 4x4's and solid axles, etc... I've been a gearhead since before I could drive, but it was always imports, Honda, VW, BMW, and recently a Toyota FJ(this is what got me into 4x4's)

Anyways, I'd like to get this truck into good working condition again and do an engine swap, lift, different transfer case if the stock unit is junk(need some input here), and probably make some bumpers and a rack as I just got my first mig-welder for xmas. I think the truck has a pretty solid base, I believe it has the 350TBI, and Corporate 14 bolt axles front and rear, and the dual front shocks. It's gonna be a long process getting her back to shape and I'll probably start with getting rid of all the cancer on the frame and body and then do some sort of lift and some decent tires. So I'm looking for some input and idea's from you full-size guys about what I can do with this truck.

I will put some pictures up later this week so you guys can get an idea what I'm dealing with here.

You are gonna love working on your burb after doing imports. The junk yard and aftermarket have a ton of parts so you can go any direction you want. There's also a ton of room underneath, on top and on the side to get at anything.

What are you going to use it for. Camping, rock crawling, expiditions?

Have fun!
