Nice work! What is the turn around from XP?

I would love to know what your cost on the box is going to be... PM is perfectly fine.

There is a truck in Germany that I am interested in, though it has already been converted from the fire service and I would end up having to pay 25% duty to get it over here... :-(

I am super excited to see your finished product!

CW.

I sent my truck to XP a couple of weeks ago now. Marc has been laying out a basic design but has only now be able to finalize a design. We are hoping to have it done by Overland Expo in May, so about 8 or so months. But you have to remember everything is done custom for my truck and my interior needs.

Cost is $550 per sqr ft for basic setup.

Post a link of the truck. But there are quite a lot of used fire truck and crane trucks out there that would be free to import.

Not to take Case's build off topic, but Brindlee is brokering some awesome low mileage LCF/COE's;

My fav here(if only it was a DoKa), besides the Bremach of course!

So a little update.

We are building the subframe and storage boxes.

We are installing an Onan diesel generator. Still trying to figure out if I want the 27 or 50 amp. I think the 27 would be fine if we ran the A/C but would have to turn it off to use the microwave. but the 50 is super overkill. Thoughts? Both sizes use less than .5gal of fuel per hour (27amp .3gal, 50amp .4gal).

I was hoping to go full DC on the truck but the amount of power we would need (A/C, fridge, TV, microwave...) would mean many batteries. So I figured an AC A/C was cheaper and easier to service, no need for an inverter. Take the two big power hogs the A/C (15amps) and the microwave (13amps) and that leaves a reasonable amount of DC power needed.

And it looks like my truck will be at this summer's Overland Expo!

What air conditioner are you using? There's a thread in the 12v section on air conditioners without using a generator, might be worth a look if haven't come across it already. I'm looking at putting in air conditioning in mine eventually, won't be running a generator though, purely off LifePO4 batteries.

If you're running high load items intermittently, might be worth looking at the LifePO4 and Victron gear. Was chatting to a friend about them the other night, their Multi is a battery charger & inverter combined. Can power something like an air conditioner & microwave at the same time, if the load is greater than that coming off generator will draw from battery, then recharge battery once load is scaled back again (if I remember right).

12 volt air con is worth a look. Adding a generator is adding a lot of weight and one more thing to service, for the money I would go with more batteries and solar if you can solve the air con issue. There is nothing more annoying than being out in the back country and hearing a generator start up!
As for batteries and big draws you can pull 25% of the battery banks Amp/hr capacity for short periods with no problems for conventional lead acid. We cook with the microwave daily and heat all water for coffee and tea with the microwave, 140 amp draw for 5-10 minutes with a 520 amp/hr bank. We have 630 watts of solar on the roof and that is the only charging source we have used for the last 11 months. We have a 24v-12v battery to battery charger that is not required. We have a few friends with MAN trucks none with generators. We have a 4Kwatt genny apparently for added traction purposes.
The point is that Onan will be expensive and probably hardly get used. A small Honda or Yamaha in a storage box for emergencies (and also never used) would be cheaper.
Just my 2 cents, good luck with the build. Joe.

I was set that I was going to fit a diesel Genset to mine (when I get to building it!), but having seen and heard Spudboys Honda Eu3i Silent petrol generator, this is the way I'll be going for sure.. Yes it'd be nice to utilise the diesel of board, but they're just too damn noisy! :)

It may not be true for the Hondas that you get down under, but in the States, all EU1000 and EU2000 generators that we receive are made in China.

Check out the Yamaha EF2000ISC. It is well reviewed and still made in Japan, while similar versions are made in China now, as well.

I gotta ask, what about all the cool stuff that was in the fire truck body?! The pumps and whatever else? I'd think you could sell that stuff easy and recoupe some $$.
