Glad to here you had a good trip and the rig worked well for you. A pyro is would be a good investment for you... Aurbun makes a decent one, but a local guy had customer service issues with them.
12 mpg seems decent... But I believe there may be some room for imprevement there. My maiden voyage I got 16-17 mpg in my 97 E350 Ambo. It's a Turbo powerstroke and a somewhat smaller/rounder box, but I wasn't nursing it, I was trying to make up time on a 200 mile trip. Depending on how much you drive, it may take a while to makeup the cost of a turbo, but I sure enjoy cruising along with pedal to spare up long grades.
