95 4Runner transfer case issues.

Okay, first a little background:
1995 4Runner, 3.0 V6, Automatic

I am having trouble disengaging the transfer case.* The shifter goes into 2WD and the indicator turn off, but the front DS is still turning.* We had it up on stands today and the hubs are unlocking and the wheels do not spin, but the DS is always spinning.* *The shifter will still change between 4H and 4L with no problems. If we hand spin the DS, the rear also spins.

If my internet research is correct, I have the VF1A transfer case and it is chain driven.* Shouldn't the DS be free when in 2WD with this setup?* Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Do I have the right model? Or is mine the electronically actuated TC?

Is the front driveshaft turning at the same speed as the rear driveshaft? As I understand, it is normal even for a "free" driveshaft to turn slowly due to fluid pressure in the T-case.

That is correct...Brian if there is no force to the driveshaft and the front wheels do not spin it is normal. It will not spin at nearly the same speed as the rear shaft, and if I remember correctly you can stop it by hand if it is up on a rack.

When we had it up, there was no stopping it. It is spinning the same as the back, fast and with force. Orgasm developed a rattle that is what started this investigation.
