96 E350 Quigley opinions sought

Hello all,

We are looking at a possible van to purchase - a 96 7.3 diesel E350 with Quigley original conversion. The van is pretty bare bones (what we want) and the price is good. 125k miles more or less. Ex government van so government maintained up to about 120k miles when sold at auction.

We would do some suspension work to try to get a better ride (Agile Offroad most likely), build out a camper interior on our own, probably get a poptop installed, put on bumpers, a winch, bigger wheels/tires, maybe upgrade front brakes, put solar on, possibly a larger/second gas tank, all sorts of stuff, that will add up to $15-20k easy.

Once built, we will spend ~2 years living out of the van travelling around South America, visiting a lot of very rural locations, so reliability is a pretty big deal to us. It's a bit scary going from an incredibly reliable 97 Tacoma 4x4 to a Ford van which will be a relative unknown to us!

So, we're just seeking general opinions about that era of E350s and that era of Quigleys, and looking to do a reality check against more experienced folks to see if we get responses like "good god don't put that much money into a van that old" or the like!

This is more for the van section but I can tell you that the 7.3 is almost bullet proof. Good luck with it I am sure others will chime in.

Where is it located? Rust would be a main concern for me, even if it was government maintained. Last year there were some really nice low mileage ex air force vans floating around and they all had bad rust. See if you can get detailed undercarriage pics.

take my advice you want...
I have roam the country in multiple different 7.3 vans for months at a time and currently doing it in FL. My current and hopefully last E350 has a fiberglass hi top on it, the way I bought it.
I know you mentioned a pop top of some sorts, I strongly suggest a pop top or a fixed hi roof. I would never ever go back to a standard interior height van if I was going to stay in it anything more than a week or so. having that extra room is priceless. Especially in a rainy climate or bad weather where you can't easily change your clothes or dry off after taking a shower or just plain stretch and walk around in comfort while you chill in your drawers.
as for the reliability of a 7.3 would such low miles just be sure the maintenance it 110 before going on your trip and you should be fine. As Chris mentioned you don't want to deal with any rust is just cancer and a big problem or can lead to big problems. The last thing you want is a big problem on the road far away from anything. I'm not too familiar with the pre 99 7 .3 but my best guess would be there just as tough as the current 7.3 or should I say last generation 7.3 PSD.

I have a 95 with 48k miles.
In spite of the low miles it had a terrible fuel leak when I got it.
I resealed the fuel bowl with all new o-rings, put in a new fuel pump while I had it apart, and replaced the hoses.
So far do good. I'm not leaving the country with it, but want to be sure it is reliable as well. I guess you should give the wiring a good look over. I have heard that the under valve cover harness can cause problems. Maybe check the visible part of the connectors for melting or other damage.
I'm really hoping my 7.3 proves to be reliable.
I actually had my truck looked over by my mechanic yesterday. He said he was surprised at how clean the motor looked and how tight all the suspension parts were.
He worked on my previous quigley which I bought new in 2000 and had to replace all the bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and even cracked lower arms.
Definitely give it a good rust inspection. Sadly that is what ultimately did in my first q-van (with only 78k miles)
I sold it to someone with the fabrication skills to rebuild it.
I am going to try hard not to let rust kill this one!!!
