97 Ford Expedition

I bought one a week or so ago, really looking forward to using it for some good camping and long expo type trips.

I run a little fab shop in Grand Junction CO, and have some plans for it over the next year:

1. Bumpers, front and rear. Front will hold a winch and have a grill guard, both with have additional lighting.

2. Suspension: This will be a little more complicated, but the front IFS will go away, and either a Dana 44 or a Dana 50/60 will be put in the front, along with radius arms and coil springs that my shop builds. Some good steering changes, and possibly hydro assist steering. In the rear, I hope to keep the 9.75, but will change it out if needed, a rear Sterling is easy to find. I hope to run 33-35" tires on it and make it capable for most things out here in Colorado/Utah. Rear springs will be upgraded to level the rig out, most likely with a set of Alcans.

3. Storage. It has the 3rd seat, so I will work up some racks that take advantage of the rails in there, as well as some roof and rear storage options.

Anyway, thats the plan over the next 12-14 months, and should be pretty cool. In all the looking around on the net, I have found almost nothing about using the Expedition as a rig for this kind of thing.

My 3 kids and wife and I will really enjoy using it, and once Im done, it should be more than able to handle whatever I want to toss at it.

I own a small fab shop in palisade actually (Battlement Fab). Been in business for a couple years, spent many years before that doing it on the side. I own an old EB that was featured in Crawl Magazine a couple months ago. I mainly do custom stuff but am getting into some sales of certain production items as well as being a reseller for anything Yukon and Ballistic.

Cool to see someone else close by already! the 89 should be awesome. Have you started it yet? Doing all the work yourself?

this is what i've got done so far on the burb, and yep doing it myself, only way to get it right! still working on how to finish the rear bumper. thinking about using some dana 44 spindles for swind out carriers in the corners. my out door garage has kinda slowed things down for right now though.

i might need a fuel tank skid fabbed for me at some point, it's kinda naked right now.

Hey Clint
Good to see some one else running an Expedition. The wife and I love ours. I have an all stock XLT 98 4x4 running a set of 285/75 BFGs with only a little rubbing in the rear at full compression. We have taken it to CO quite a few times, I think for what it is it does very well offroad. We have taken it down some medium trails and some easy trails, never any hard trails. We like to hang around Lake City and Silverton and Ouray and have been down quite a few passes in that area. It hasn't let us down so far. The last trip we went on was a 4K mile trip around CO, Utah, AZ and NM. It never missed a beat. I am not a master craftsman but I built a bed system in the rear which removed all the rear seats and it worked well, could have been better of course, but it got the job done.

Can't wait to see what you do to yours. Please post pictures, I have been think about building mine up as well.

Im really backed up in the shop, so it wont start for a few months I imagine. In the meantime, Im just looking for deals on parts to stack up in a corner...

Looks like all the cool guys are migrating here:victory: Good luck Clint you know where to find me.

Steve, question: With the all wheel drive that is on this thing, if I find a front axle with unit bearings can I retain that mode? What do I need to look for on the rear? if I replace it as well. It works pretty darn good and it would be nice not to lose it. If I end up losing it then I will replace the Tcase and whatnot and just be done with it I think.

Might work with a front that has ABS sensors, that system is very dependent on the ABS system for it's data. Maybe a Super duty Dana 50 front and a Sterling rear? Quite a few of the Dana 50 fronts didn't have ABS but they would be easy to convert to ABS.

looks like thats the route to go. I really like that a4wd setting and would hate to lose it.

Welcome ! Can't wait to see pics of your build. :D

Thanks!

When I bought the rig, it had door damage on the driver rear, door is not worth saving. The door jamb is also torn up. Next week I will go cut a piece out of a wrecked expo I found, and replace it, along with the door. Then it will be time to prep it and paint it, then get to work on the rig.

Most mall crawlers do like the AWD setting makes getting over the curbs easier.:D:D Got a yard up there up there that might have that stuff?

i will be watching your thread! I love my expedition and would love to do some work on it someday to make it more trail worthy.

I have a 99. What engine do you have the 5.4 or 4.6?
