97 Montero Keyless entry help

Gents,

So got my 97. It has what I believe is the factory alarm system Have the led/button on the right side of the dash. Have been have to push it to start the Montero. Ordered what is the factory remote (2button). Followed the instructions to program. The problem is, the system does not do anything when I press the remote button as per instructions. Changed Batteries. I unplugged the system behind the dash and unplugged/plugged everything back in. The little light flashes. I also put the fuse back in the alarm slot. So, do I try another remote or just buy a viper or similar system .

Unless you ordered it new from a dealer, my guess is that you have the wrong remote through no fault of your own. There's 3 or 4 Mitsu key fobs that look identical, but use different signaling protocols. A lot of people selling them don't know the difference either. The only way to tell them apart is to look at the FCC license ID that's silkscreened on the back of the fob. Hopefully it isn't worn off. The one for the Montero should be E4EG8DB. That's the same one that's used on the 3000GT, Diamante wagon (but not the sedan) and the 93-98 Galant.

The keyless entry unit is in the passenger side rear of the truck. The unit under the dash is probably the ETACS (body control) module. Prior to roughly 2000, they were two separate modules.

Solved Keyless remote issue

Thanks for the Feedback. Here is what I learned through this process. Hopes this helps the next guy. Jeff, you are correct in that i ordered the wrong remote. The alarm module is behind the left dash speaker. Even though its says Mitsubishi, its an aftermarket system installed in many vehicles by the dealer. The company is called CODE Systems INC. The system in the picture is the same unit under my dash. I also have the little led light/button on the left hand side of the dash. I also included pic of the remote used for this system. The FCC GOH M24 is the number of the remote you will need. Ford and Subaru also used this remote, so they are on ebay pretty cheap. There is also a clone of this on Ebay for like $22.00 and its brand new, and I have a picture of it on the 3rd attachment. That is the one I am ordering. I emailed the vendor and he confirmed that as long its the FCC GOH M24 type, it will work and program to this system in my Montero

Here are the programming instructions for this type of remote:

1. Open the driver's door.
2. Turn the ignition key ON (ON is the position just shy of cranking the engine).
3. Press and hold the programming/override button (located under or at the bottom of the driver's side dash). In approximately 20 seconds the system will start to cycle the door locks and the siren (if equipped) 3 times to indicate the system has entered the transmitter learn mode (DO NOT RELEASE THE PROGRAMMING/OVERRIDE BUTTON).
4. Press the #1 button (top left button) on the unprogrammed transmitter. The system will respond by cycling the door locks and the siren (if equipped) one time to indicate the transmitter has been learned.
5. All other transmitters (up to four) also need to be programmed at this time.
6. Programming is now complete, let go of the programming/override button and turn ignition off to exit learn mode. Test all remotes for proper programming.

How difficult is it to remove this system completely?

Wow. I've never seen a Mitsubishi-branded, aftermarket alarm system before. I'm glad you've got a solution in the works. Good luck.

Its not hard to remove. Remove the lower dash panel. That is the most time consuming due to the angles. Then remove the left dash speaker. Behind it is a aluminum plate with 2 screws. Remove that and unplug the 4 plugs, then you have what is in the picture all out.


Yeah not sure why the variances on these. From what I read, if the montero did not come from factory this was a dealer option through Mitsubishi. It was made for the montero as its plug and play. Just hard to figure out on the remotes. From my research, a true factory system is above the rear passenger wheel well, on the right of the speaker.

Once you have the system out, do the plugs that are left in the truck connect to each other in an obvious manner?

And how will the truck operate after that? Normal electric locks, and no use for the little orange light on the dash to the left of the cluster?

The last part I cannot telly you. I left mine in. Waiting for the remote to come in. What I did notice now, is if I leave the montero unlocked it will lock itself in few minutes.

So, the remote came in. Programmed per instructions. Worked sort of like a charm. When you press the unlock button the locks would unlock then lock. So based on the feedback here, I had to open the door actuator and fixed the bumpers. I cut some rubber hose and glued to create thickness. Now the remote works like a charm, both locking and unlocking. If anyone needs some help here, let me know. This Forum helped me to get this feature going.

Now on to a JBL speaker upgrade with AMP......
