97 SR Transfer-case Problem?

OK, I need a little input and I'll let you know the problem.

If I put the transfer case in 4x4 and the 4x4 lights blink, am I in 4x4? The transfer case in manual right, so whether the light is flashing or not, shouldn't it be in 4x4?

Now my question, I took it out this weekend for our first voyage and when I put it in 4H it acted like the transmission was slipping when starting from a dead stop. The engine reved up buy it barely moved. 4x4 light flashing. I put it in neutral and shifted to 4Hlock and the 4x4 light still flashed but it drove like it should and the trans did not act like in 4H.

SO, what's the verdict?

I can answer your first question. When you shift the lever into 4WD you are mechanically doing it, so yes it is in 4WD. The lights on the dash are blinking because there is a malfunction in the electrical system that notifies you that you are in 4WD

That is one great resourse right there.
I'll save it to my favorites and print it out.

I can see now that if the front differential is not engaging, then the trans will act like it's slipping in 4auto but not in 4 lock.
This is a relief as I had fears the transfer case was shot.

If you have manual hubs that aren't locked, shifting into 4WD without locking the center diff means that the front driveshaft will spin freely and no power will be transmitted to any drive wheels.

Little update,
I crawled under it today and pulled the boot back on the front diff shift rod to find that someone had pulled the pin out of the linkage and had it shifted in 2wheel mode.

The shift rod shifted smooth from 2x to 4x mode with me spinning the front driveshaft some.

I only have vacuum on one of the lines to the actuator when shifting through the transfer case with the engine running. I cleaned the wiring going into both solenoids but that didn't help it any.

I guess I'm chasing electrical issues???

I got some locking hubs coming so I'll have 4x4 one way or another. It's going to have to cool down some before I'll feel like crawling around it.
