98 4runner Diagnostic Help

Good day,

Having an issue with my 4runner, only ever owned manual transmission 4runners so this is new to me.

When the vehicle is in Park the Drive light stats illuminated on the dash. When you shift to Drive the Park light goes off but when you shift back to Park the Drive light stays on? When you put it in Reverse the Drive light is illuminated also, when you go back to Drive the Reverse light goes off.

So Drive light stays illuminated on the dash regardless, vehicle drives fine no issues at all shifting gears.

Thoughts?

I havent tried 4runner.org but I have googled it and came up with nothing.

Very strange, just started yesterday. Was hoping someone on here would have some clue's or that someone had heard of this issue before. I know there's lots of knowledgeable toyota people on here.

I've never seen this before. so i'm going to take a wild shot in the dark and say maybe the the switch in the center console is contacting with something like a bad spring? Like I said before. I haven't seen this so i'm probably way off but it gives you a place to start.

My 80 series used to play around with those lights. One hard smash to the dash and it changed a bit. I just knocked the dash from the top, above the cluster, and it acted normal for a year or so.

But the other guy is right, probably the switches around the shifter. Maybe too many dust bunnies and french fry remnants got in there.

No dust or fries lol, interior is kept very clean, outside sees the action.

Just wanted to update this thread, today out of nowhere the illuminated Drive light on the dash went off. Everything is working as it should again, whatever it was fixed itself.

The issue has not come back, so far so good
