1998 Dodge diesel, quad cab (4 doors), short bed, auto, 180k, 4x4, 3:54 gears. Was a work truck owned by REC Solar here in San Luis Obispo, CA. The company outgrew the truck but took good care of it, mechanically. It runs like a champ.

More detailed pictures here: http://billybee.smugmug.com/Cars/CTD-FP/12621221_8Rkhy#906732805_EBA65

The good:
  • Has nearly mew Michelin LTX A/T 2 tires
  • Gets almost 20 mpg.
  • This is a CA truck. The undercarriage is amazingly clean. No rust whatsoever.
  • Dealer maintained for the first 100k miles. The last 78k it was maintained at an independent shop.
  • All major components are strong. No funny noises or bad habits.
  • Recent lift pump.
  • Leather interior.
  • Dash pad. No cracks in dash.
  • Front end is tight.
  • Alcoas

The bad:
Not a perfect truck. It is a used work truck. Needs several things:
  • Some body work. I had NO plans to do any body work, unless adding desert pinstriping = "bodywork."
  • Power drivers seat tilt function inop. Checked the power to the motors and they are getting juice. Tried tapping on the motors to free them up if they were seized. Nope. They are burned out. I have been looking for a manual seat track to replace it. These motors are notoriously crappy.
  • A/C is inop. Have not begun to look at it.
  • Steering box has some play. Not bad by Dodge standards.
  • Seat cushions are worn. The solution is to find a passenger-side cushion and install it on the driver's side. Easy fix.

The Ugly
There is really nothing ugly about the truck. I'd take it anywhere.

Flip Pac
Bought from a seller Expo Portal. Manufactured in August of '03. Painted green. Decent shape. Some slits in screens. Tent is sound. Some stains on the bed. (Eeeeeewwwww....)

Was mounted on a 2003 Chevy short bed. I have mounted the FP to the Dodge. It has a rubber (not foam) gasket between the bed and shell. Bought the special Dodge clips to hold the struts to the fenders. It is 100% ready to go camping.

Came with carpet kit: benches, floor, storage...cool. If you want to do a custom build, I will keep the carpet and reduce the price.

Asking $8950 for both.

Thanks for looking,
Bill

That's much better... Updated pictures!!!

Got the FP on and interior in and truck washed and a ton of pine pitch cleaned off the hood. Looks OK. It's going to be a very capable/comfortable rig.

See for yourself:

is the pooch included?

And what about the flipflops?

Long story about the pooch: we were driving along a busy two-lane between our house and San Luis Obispo; she was playing in traffic and eating road kill. I got her out of traffic and looked around to she where she may have come from. I looked up and she was gone. She was hiding in the back of our truck.

Six days later she gave birth to 10 lab puppies. That was nine weeks ago. As of tonight, we have homes for all ten puppies and for Ladybug, the yellow lab. She has been a great gift and is going to the perfect home.

Here's a link to a vid of the litter playing with mom. She's getting spayed next we so this NEVER happens again...

So, she does not come with the rig, but I am happy to throw in the flips. You'd be a dope for getting them anywhere near your feet, but if it seals a deal...

I have modified my original post to reflect:
  • $500 price reduction...but I am fairly firm on the price now
  • The work I have done on the truck. I went to a junk yard and pulled the wiring harness from a similar and put all the wiring under the bed back to 100% stock. Very tidy.
  • I mounted the FP using s rubber gasket to help keep dust out.
  • Struts and clips attached to the fenders.

I am taking it camping this weekend. I'll take some pictures.

Still really needs new rear tires. I am looking on CL for some good, slightly used tires. I'll come up with a nice set-up.

Still also selling my Jeep CJ8 and Toyota T100 (and probably a Jetta diesel).

Action shots...

As promised, here are some pix from the weekend. Drove to the Carmel Valley Friday evening. Got there late cause I kept stopping for food. Did catch a beautiful moonrise on the iPhone cam...

Spent the first night at White Oak Campground off of the Tassajara Road. It was late when I arrived and early when I left. So, I did not get to see much. Slept comfortably considering it was my first night in the new camping rig...

Drove to work on Saturday AM and gave a lesson at noon. (I teach at the Land Rover Experience Driving School at Quail Lodge.) Took the rig through the Instructor's Loop after work. Pleased with the articulation in the stock suspension. Too stiff rear springs and an anti-roll bar. Would be a much better wheeler without those goo-gaws...

And set up camp...

Cook some food...

Went to sleep early...no pictures of that.

Did some trail work on Sunday. There was an oak across a short downhill section. It was mostly all cut up but I had to cut some kindling and haul it all outta there...

With stiff rear springs and anti, roll bar, the truck handles well. Steering is not exactly BMW quality, but I took the PCH home from Carmel and it did great. With the off-roading and the miles of hilly twisties, fuel economy suffered. Somewhere between 16 and 17. No worse than I would have gotten in my T100 under the same conditions...except I could not have off-roaded the 2wd Toy.

Quick FYI--my Toyota T100 is still for sale and if I sell that, I can keep my Dodge (which is what I really want to do...).

Thanks for looking,
bb

This is exactly what I want...but I doubt you're willing to trade for a 2007 Ram 1500 thats currently under a lease contract, hehehehe.

Good luck, hopefully you can sell the Toy and keep the Dodge.

Hi. I would love an excuse to get back down to SLO! Would you be interested in selling the truck without the flip and carpet kit? I don't know what that would do to your price, but I really don't need either one. I suppose the flippack would be nice, but I wouldn't get to use it much. I assume it would be easy to sell the flip by itself on here?

Thanks, James

Billy, I am definitely interested in your truck. Wifey gave it the ok this morning IF the price is right as I have to import it to Canada. I bought my F350 in Oakland,so this is an easy deal for me. I have ca$h too! I may be without internet for a few days as I am moving, so if you are interested, give me a call at 778 821 1663.:sombrero:

Thanks again, James

I would consider selling separately. Left you a VM. Call when you can and good luck with the move.

If you end up selling the truck without the flip, what might you want for it? I'm local-ish (Ok, so Oceanside might not exactly be local, but this could be the excuse to visit Pismo that I've been looking for) and very interested, depending on the price.

Not exactly sure which you are interested in--the flip or the CTD. I'll cover both:

The FP needs a few small things still, and I have put a lot of work into it already; so, I am thinking of starting out asking $1800. Anybody can look through the FS listings here and see what I paid. But I have a lot invested in it in parts, time, and travel. And it is still a good deal. Further, I can't sell it without the final clean-up, putting a third latch on it, double checking all the seals as Martyn suggests checking them, helping the new owner install it, and maybe even delivery to SoCal...

The Dodge is still a work in progress, too. Found some nice Michelins today that I hope to buy and am continually working on the truck to make it clean, comfortable, safe, and reliable--cleaning the leather, carpet, door panels; replacing the little bits that are worn; searching for a rear bumper (I have found two that will work); found some diamond plate bed rails that will cover some ugliness on the rim of the truck bed; I am continually working some of the dents out making the truck ready for body work and making it look acceptable in the meantime. There's more. So, $7250 for the truck.

Bottom line: 1) I'd really like to keep the rig if that's at all financially possible for me right now; 2) If I sell, I prefer to sell as a package; 3) If the Dodge goes, I would like to keep the carpet kit and use it in my T100 with a basic fiberglass shell.

Sorry for the wordiness here. Trying to cover all the bases...

Sorry for the lapse in communication here. I had a gnarly couple of weeks with a death in the family and travel to the east coast. I am back online and I know I owe James some pictures of the interior. I will take them today or tomorrow and post them up here.

Still hoping to sell my CJ8 and T100 rather than this rig. Wifey is warming up to the Dodge (I think). But she wants something gone...

Thanks everybody,
bb
