A Challenge - How Obese is your Rig?

I'm sure it's been covered, but GVWR isn't what your car weighs. That's a projected maximum weight of a fully loaded vehicle, usually assuming 150 lbs per seat belt, and mfr's specified maximum cargo weights.

For example, my Montero's curb weight (unloaded) is about 4460 lbs. The GVWR is 5730 lbs.

Anyhow...I'm quite curious as to my actual rolling weight now on trips.

I did remove both the 2nd and 3rd row seats, to allow for more cargo capacity (and interior space for stuff), but then I've added some accessories as well.

I had a 6x12 enclosed U-Haul trailer full of wood scraps that I was hauling to the dump a couple weeks ago...that was amusing. I pulled on to the scales with my Montero + full trailer, no passengers...it came in at 10,150 lbs. (!!!)

When we scaled out to leave after emptying the trailer, the scales showed 6,670 lbs. (again...Montero, empty U-Haul trailer, and no passengers).

Turns out I had 1.74 tons of scrap wood in the U-Haul trailer. YIKES!!!

I would imagine my fully loaded weight with 1 passenger and a 4-day trip loadout and all the fuel topped off to be pretty close to ~5250 lbs.

First of all it's not a car it's a truck ;) 2nd it scaled out fully loaded at 10,160. That would be the load for cross country overland trip. Doing the f-250 spring mod/upgrade to the Ex for added stability but I have to say it did fine as is.

Oh no..that wasn't fully loaded! That was no passengers, no 2nd/3rd row seats installed, no gear, no food, etc. The truck (;)) itself was empty. It was just a heavy-***** trailer load (1940 lb trailer with 3750 lbs of lumber inside).

I try to stay as light as possible on actual trips. Off roading is no fun when your suspension is already 50% compressed with a static load.

18 959 pounds which is 7041 pounds UNDER GVW. That's with 4 in the cab, 150 gallons of fresh water, 80 gallons of diesel, food and drinks for 4 days. Its like driving a car, it steers good, stops great, and even goes up hills at speed!

Must see pics of something 7000 lbs UNDER GVW :)

I am looking forward to putting my rig back on the scales soon after I get the interior done. I am trying to keep her light so we will see.

First built on a F-700 4x4 chassis with 33 000 pound GVW. It had a 5.9 Cummins and it was fine with just the camper. When I hooked the trailer on, which we haul up to 4 bikes and a Jeep in it really sucked it down on hills, crossing the divide with that configuration wasn't going to fly. So I bought a mint F-650 crew cab with a C7 and an Allison 5 speed, the 650 has a 26 000 pound GVW, I swapped everything over in a weekend, and much happier. It might get a EZ Trac front drive axle this winter but the reality is we have used the shorts off of this thing for the last 2 months, drove through a few meadows, and had no issues, there is nothing that has stopped us yet and all of our camping is remote (we race xc and hs). There is only slightly more than 3000 pounds on each tire, which is way under the load rating of a 11R22.5 so the footprint is pretty light. As stated the rig comes in at 18 959 lbs with 4 on board, full fuel, 150 gallons water, full propane. And....it's pretty sexy inside!
