Surprised we didn't see you too. We were at the GC the day before and still in town Sunday AM. Looks like from the weather board it was still downright cold. Funny they recommended chains for the east side, but i didnt see one person with them. And you wonder why people slid off in the snow.

I can only hope to do this same stuff with my son as he grows into a man. I am trying not to be too much of a dork for him to want to hang with his pops.

I didn't see you, I wouldn't have missed a SMB. I was amazed a how many people were passing me at 50+ mph as I was going ~30mph on those icy roads. The LC is confident on the snowy roads, but not that confident.

We then made our way to the 'Mouse Tank' which is a neat little canyon that has a natural water 'tank' that allowed a so-called rogue native in the area to hide out for some time after a conflict with settlers in the area.

All throughout the canyon were petroglyphs pecked into the walls. I have only seen one other place that has the same concentration of petroglyphs, Nine Mile Canyon in Utah.

The actual 'mouse tank' (sorry the photo is weak)

Just past the mouse tank is a place called (I believe) Rainbow Point:

We then went to see some old cabins (somewhat reconstructed) that were used by the CCC in the 30's and 40's.

Right above the cabins to the left was yet another nice panel of petroglyphs.

We had our fun there in VOF SP and after a quick trip to the visitor center, we were on our way to Lake Mead. I had only seen Lake Mead from the air, so it was nice to catch a glimpse of it from land.

We hit up the Hoover Dam, but as there was a few miles of traffic waiting to cross, and the dam itself was so busy we decided to not stop and visit. Little did we know we were going to have to stop regardless as anything with a covered load or in our case a 'roof box' would have to stop and be inspected.

We stopped in Kingman, AZ for a bite to eat and a fill of petrol. Knowing that the weather would be cold, we wanted our tanks full so we wouldn't need to cook anything once settled in camp.

We made it to a campground (the only one open on the South Rim) quite late, as I was driving cautiously due to the amount of ice on the roadways. We attempted to pay at the self-pay kiosk at the entrance to the campground, but once I selected 'yes' to the question of "Do you have a Golden Age, Access...pass?" it wouldn't allow me to plug in the numbers to my pass. I decided I would try again in the morning, and we went into camp. Here is where I found the Maggioina and especially the Columbus shine; camp was setup in literally just seconds.
Despite it being -4 degrees that night, we both slept warm, and I even found myself waking to take off a layer and to put in my earplugs (a must for a tent mate that snores).
We awoke early to catch the morning light of the Grand Canyon. I had seen it once before as a child, but it was as if I was seeing it all over again. Despite my best efforts, I was simply unable to capture the grandeur of that vast chasm in the earth.
