In my case I am that mechanic, but the loose connection was at the primary battery ( I run duals batts in parallel no solenoid ) My radio was down for a while as I was messing with a bad pot on the control head and waiting on a part. During that time I had some issues of weak starts and other odd behavior. I found the loose terminal and wha-la back to normal. A couple of weeks later when my parts arrived and I finished my control head repair I went to run the radio and found the burned up neg lead. Until your post I was baffled as to how anything fed back that way. I didn't associate the two events at all.
Now when I add in your information and realized the only other neg wire directly tied to a terminal was the radio, it was on the accessory batt but as mentioned I don't have them isolated then I really think this might have been the culprit.
I have the new radio in hand now and will be checking all connections before the install. Also the new one comes with inline fuses on both leads.
