After nearly 4 months of patiently looking, scanning the used car websites, crunching the numbers we finally picked up our first 80 Series Landcruiser this past Thursday. :wings:

Because the existing tires failed to pass safety inspection, it now rolls around on a new set of these…

Items that need to be addressed immediately:

Put tools and recovery gear in drawer system
Diff breather extension mod
Hi-Lift jack
Matching spare, current one is 7.5R16
Shovel
Prepare a comprehensive spares kit
On board air compressor for tire inflation and locker operation down the road.
Replace OEM steering damper

Longer term changes once we use the vehicle on a few trips and figure out what's more important. Also known as the wish list!

Driving lights
Awning and side panels
Fridge Freeze
Tyre Plyers
MaxTrax
Winch
Lockers both ends
Water tank
Roof Top Tent or Swagg
Replacement rear bar with swing outs

The possibilities are just endless! :sombrero:

The irony of it all...

On the first day of ownership, I drove Martha to work in the new rig. We start talking about how things have finally fallen into place and of previous vehicles. We reminisce and have a good laugh about "The Bomb" but it was not going down without a fight...

At the next set of lights, we look over and to our amazement there she is, in all her glory! :Wow1: Funny coincidence or is it? I smell cruiser sabotage coming on...

Dead giveaway, "Rent A Bomb" sticker, white and mismatched hub caps, there is no mistaking it. :costumed-smiley-007

Proper recovery points on an 80

Pardon the newbie question...
What is the general concensus on these front and rear mounted loops for the 80 series? Are they considered proper recovery points?

:wings:That looks great P! Congrats on the new 80. It looks like its in good shape and it already has a bit of a setup going on. Very nice platform to start your adventures down under! Keep us posted on improvements, and of course any trips you get to make...

Well done Pierre nice!

Those hooks can work, but have also seen them rip open. Ours are removed for something more solid mounted on the ARB bumper

Pierre,
Congrats on the acquisition - let the mods begin!! Time for a new build thread!
Can't speak from experience with an 80 series - by those loops - seem to work fine on my FJ (have pulled enough folks out, using them).

Congratulations

Pierre,

Well, it looks like your patience finally paid off. Also great that a bunch of the mods are already done for you.

I find it interesting that most of the Aussie 4WD vehicles I've seen have cargo barriers installed. This is an excellent idea, and one that we should embrace here in North America.

That looks like an excellent find. Now, clean her up and go out and get her dirty and tell us all about it. :smiley_drive:

Wow. You have bought yourself a fine example of a LandCruiser. Congratulations. Those factory hoops will be fine for awhile, get out and use that thing.

I'm sure more than one ExPo'R is jealous!

I'm very happy for you and Martha :wings:

I love the cargo doors. What is that something like 36-gallons of fuel capacity? I bet your range is very good compared to most North American rigs!

Because the old tires didn't pass safety inspection did you have to buy the new tires or was that part of the seller’s obligation? If you chose the MTZs why did you pick them? How is the noise or lack thereof? Having read a few Aussie forums I get the impression that the Mickey Thompson MTZ is a very popular tire down there. I like the look of the tread.

Cheers,

Ive attached a tow strap to it and pulled a Tundra and 2 FJCruisers that were stuck in snow. And just recently a Jeep Wrangler from a snow bank.

Ill probably think twice if it was a rig stuck in a sucking mud hole.

Good looking no nonsense truck and would love to have a diesel in mine!

Out-freakin'-standing. :jumping:

The drawers and snorkel set it soooo far part form the norm. And white, how appropriate. ;)

Nice one P! :clapsmile

Congrats!

Now, on those loops, I've done my share of pulling with them but for a true snatch you'll want something else, I've heard reports.
