We had scheduled to do the Alpine Loop, but we had a bit of an issue. My youngest son broke his glasses and old dad forgot to pack a spare. Soooo we had to drive an hour out of the way to a larger town to get them repaired. That kind of messed with our timetable a bit. Unfortunately we had to skip it.
We used our last day in the San Juan area to ride and camp Last Dollar Road
I think this camp spot will work

We headed over to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve as our last stop before the trip back home.
We picked up Medano Pass trail off of hwy 69. The trail was fun and easy. We reached the Pass before we knew it. The mosquitos were hell as we descended into the Preserve. They cleared as he made it to the Park. The dunes were amazing

We thought that was the end of our adventure. That was until we lost power steering at 75mph on I40 in Oklamoma. The radiator fan bearing sheared off, as well as the serpentine belt. Thankfully, no one was hurt and no other damage. We called AAA. The wrecker was there in 15 minutes. He drove us to a Nissan dealer in Oklahoma City. After a few hours, we were on our way!
We had an amazing adventure. The sites we incredible. The time together was even better. The boys even said they grew closer on this trip. I call that a success!

Sounds like a great trip. Reminds me of my childhood trips with the family. Your boys will appreciate this time you all spent together for the rest of their lives.

Great pictures, and lucky kids to have a Dad like you I gotta say. We grew up with a Dad who loved the adventure and the memories and stories we have to recount our childhood experiences outweigh any amount of money or bag of shiny gold in the world. Good stuff indeed.
You will have to return to Engineer Pass (via mineral Creek Trail). It is well worth it. We will have to return to Ouray ourselves to experience the other mountain passes that we did not have time to trek over.

Just read through the entire thread, great writing and pictures! Do you think the trails you took through Colorado would be passable with a first gen 2wd 4cyl Frontier with a little suspension lift and tires like yours? I have an idea for a adventure truck that would be driven on road 95% of the time, but I'd like to get to places like in your pictures occasionally. 4wd and bigger engines are more costly to buy and run and I'd like to save money where I can.

As for a 2wd, I personally wouldn't attempt the San Juan trails. But I also don't have a deep background in off pavement driving. If you are very experienced, then by all means, go for it. But I highly recommend you ride with someone who has recovery gear. I recently saw photos of a very capable vehicle that needed to be winched because of a slight misjudgment. Recovery is very expensive. I would also invest in FunTreks Colorado San Juan trail book for detailed explanations of each trail.

thanks. My experience trail driving is limited to the 300 feet of dirt road i have to drive down to get to my house.. Also, I'd be alone, none of my friends have realized yet that there is more to life than working and paying bills, so nobody to explore with.
