I personally liked the idea but not the price tag. I've had my action packer for years so I figured what the heck and I came up with my own rendition.

I mounted it to my roll cage using 1/4" x 2" ubolts through some 1/4" thick brackets I made up

I split it in the middle across the top to keep the opening profile lower so it would not hit he roof of my 4runner.

Kinda seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist to me. Action Packers are nice for what they are but they aren't weather proof so locking them on the outside is a poor idea anyway.

Interesting idea if you're trying to stop the lid from opening especially when kept outside in your bed or on your roof. I'm sure plenty will buy it. Even more if they charged less for it.

That said, I'm not sure how many will use it that way for extended off road trips (miles and miles behind another rig on dusty dirty trails).

Depending on the model, it is definitely possible to loose lids. I lost 2 from 2 different sized packers at freeway speeds when they were on my roof rack with a Thule/Yakima bungie cord net. It was the kind with the latch on a long side and the 2 "hinge" parts on the opposite side. Both lids came off the packer and squeezed out through the cargo net while I was traveling at 65mph on the freeway.:Wow1:

I've also tried bungie'ing them by putting hooks in the dimples at each corner of the lids using adjustable bungie cord straps. That didn't work either so I put eye hooks in each corner and tied the lids to the bottoms that way. Finally worked but geeze it definitely wasn't worth it & def. not a KISS solution.

In addition to that, the shape is really a poor use of space/volume because of their 'tiered' walls. :ylsmoke: Yes, I guess you can say I'm not a fan of using them overland. In the garage though they're great storage bins. LOL

Action Packers....... weatherproofing

Hello all...... I have used my Action Packers on my trips to northern Quebec in 31/2 days of rain, than dust on hundreds of gravel roads sitting in my roof basket strapped down with ratchet straps. lids were held closed w/bungee cords, no mud, water or later dust inside, none. Just run a strip of foam weather stripping around the top of the box and when you clamp the lid shut, voila! weatherproof and at highway speeds to boot! $$$, x-tra weight, those brackets, holders are neat looking..... but not for me. (HJ, if you read this post...... I'll work on posting of photographs for the future :) stay safe, mjmcdowell

I think the concept is that since action packers are relatively cheap they can be replaced easily but still have a secure mounting system in place. If a box breaks no problem. With a Zarges type box if it get bent ,buckled etc much more expensive to replace. Just my 2 cents.

I have to say that I haven't seen this mount before but I love it! I realize its a lot of money to spend securing a cheap box but just because the box is cheap doesn't mean its all bad. You try witnessing an accident and being first on the scene where the passenger was decapitated by improperly secured cargo and you will change your mind about the cost.............needless to say it changes your perspective on things.

I couldn't agree more! My action packer has been through hell and its just finally needing replacement after being put through plenty of abuse and neglect and several years of service (5+). With some cheap a-s-s weather stripping and a few bucks you have a box that will preform 75% as well as a large Pelican or Zarges box and still be able to get out there and actually enjoy it.

(not trying to start a fight but in the end its really about getting out of there in one piece and spending time with those you love)

Zarges cases might get dinged up, but you'd have a very hard time bending or buckling them. Ask Gunter Holtorf http://www.zargescases.com/casestudies/outdoor

His have traveled over 400,000 miles. :smiley_drive:

Zarges cases on the roof.
