Added guages

Thanks for the info.

Why do some engines get damaged with low pump pressure? Is it because the diesel fuel itself cools the combustion chambers?

My naive mind expects it would be just like running out of gas/diesel.. i.e. it just chugs to a stop, no hard done.

It's not really the engine that gets damaged it the high pressure injection pump. Excess fuel from the lift pump keeps the high pressure pump cool. It's only on the earlier doges that I know of.

On a related note, digital gauges look cool, but I prefer analog as you can tell at a glance, without having to actually read it, if you're out of the normal range. Additionally, if they are round after-market gauges it helps if you clock them so normal has the needles all pointing the same, 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, or 9 o'clock.
For very critical systems you might consider a warning buzzer or light in addition to the gauge. The buzzer or light could be shared so you only need one.

I first encountered this at a dirt track / sprint car race and thought it was a great idea. All pointing straight up is a great 'instant check'. Likewise the 9 o'clock position as most gauges read low to high left to right. So you can instantly take in whether you are reading normal, low or high.

Low fuel pressure to the Bosch VP44 fuel injection pump used on '98-02 Dodge 24V Cummins will cause it to cavitate to death. There are usually no symptoms until the pump is destroyed.

I haven't installed them yet but I'm replacing the ridiculous center "gauges" in my Gen II Montero with far more useful ones: tranny temp, voltage, oil pressure. These are things I like to monitor when I'm on the trails.

I've been wanting to add a mechanical oil pressure gauge to my truck. 09 silverado with a 5.3. I haven't found anything on line asa far as locating a spot for the sending unit on the motor. I dont mean to hijack, but it seems relevant to the thread. Any information welcome.
