Adding Windows to Ambulance Box

Anyone have any knowledge about cutting into ambulance aluminum wall framing to add windows. Someone told me it’s tricky and if done right, very expensive. Is it because new rough framing have be welded? I have option to get a great deal on a Type 3 but it doesn’t have passenger side window over bed/seat area. Don’t want to buy and then realize it is indeed a major job to add a window.

Kinda depends on your box manufacturer, many leave a blank spot in the framing for an optional pass. window. Others just cut out what’s needed and weld/bolt in more framing as needed. Search the forum for more details.

Have a look at my build thread. I installed windows into the side doors of the box.

If you're looking at cutting windows in the wall I don't see any issues either but would be much easier to do it with a gutted box. Those box are overkilled and cutting some holes won't affect them much.

I even cut a giant hole in my roof but obviously reinforced the opening.

All in all, no real concerns.

I agree with @Abitibi. I cut a hole part way through the wall part way down the wall. No surprises to be found.

I’d likely position it so I’d only need to cut through one ‘stud’, and horizontally brace the opening. Bolt through would be adequate... although having it welded wouldn’t break the bank if you did the prep.

It depends

The box is designed to incorporate roll over protection so it is much more heavily built that a rv. If you want to have passengers ride in the box and retain the protection it can be a lot of work. If this is not a concern then it is easier also the existing framing and the size of the window okay into the equation. The best thing to do is gut the box before ordering the windows so you can size them to minimize your issues

Our box had a spot that was framed almost perfectly to add a window so we just cut out the hole for the window installed it!
