Thanks for the response.
if the truck is as described, I plan on taking it to the toyota dealership for exactly what you mentioned.
I have to admit that I am not looking for a lot of power, I am looking for a drop dead reliable truck.
Thanks for the pointer on the 1996 I will research that for sure.

do you recall what your real world MPG was before the SAS lift tires etc?
The fellow claims about 16-18 mixed and 20 highway.
I for one, like to get insight from others as well

how many miles did you 95 have on it when you got rid of it?

Thanks again for the post
Drop dead reliable aye? Run far and fast from the 3.0 then.....junk! No power, terrible fuel economy and notoriously unreliable. Run man run!
I did sell a SR5 22re 5 speed 4Runner a couple years ago for 2500. FYI.

Is there a way to tell if a head gasket has been replaced??? I'm going to look at a 94' pickup w/ 5speed that has 235k on with the 3.slow....

Not without tearing it down. While shopping for a van for my wife over a year ago, I had a seller who had a lot of paperwork for work he had completed. I took it to a mechanic to check things out and found that it was all a fake. I found a card for the shop that did the work in the van with his cousin's name on it as the owner of the shop. I ran away from that one very fast.

Sadly,
I am stuck with an auto. The primary driver will be the lady I need something for her to drive in the snow. Last winter we bought a beater with a heater off a local farmer
90 s-10 blazer sport. it was a total hunk of junk but i knew that. the heater worked and the 4x4 worked and it had clearance.
I am just trying to buy some time so that we do not have two loans out at a time .

Thanks for all of the view points, I would be more then happy if this 3.slow got 20 thousand miles out of it. if we decide we love the truck, we would do the 3.4 swap.

anyways, lots to think about, the truck goes in Wed for a " toyota pre purchase inspection" that will include a compression test.

What I do know is that no matter how badly I would like an old 4 runner as our back up winter rig, this kid aint getting 2700 for a truck that KBB puts at 2k in " excellent " and NADA puts at " clean trade in" at 2500

I welcome any and all view points, I know that this truck is not going to roll 350k miles with out work and money, that is not what I am looking for.
I dont mind spending a bit of money to keep a truck running, it is still cheaper then a payment, and a good learning tool and chance for me

keep it coming
cheers

You can sign up on Toyota.com as an owner, enter the VIN, and you can see all the service/maintenance history, recalls, TSBs ever performed by a Toyota dealership. Just remember this shows work done ONLY by any Toyota dealership...No other dealerships, chains, or local garages...It does help to verify if a seller says they had Toyota do work, though...

If it was done under the Toyota recall you can have a dealer check the VIN. Otherwise, run a compression check with a leak-down is about all you can do.
