Well, I hear you about never camping in a tent in bear country, but... backpackers do it all the time. I do so, but I'm careful. Keep a clean camp.
Yup the bear can be one heck of a problem in remote country. Had one fellow tell me "I'd never camp in bear country." I was flabbergasted. That cuts out an awful lot of North America. And there are vast chunks of North America that can't be driven to - leaving only the tent as an option for shelter.

Fly fishing for silvers in Alaska - yes - I stayed in a cabin on that adventure. Saw bears almost every day.
But yes, it's something that I'm wary of. Gotta respect the bear.
