Advice Sought on Potential Tundra Purchase

A friend of mine is selling a 2016 Tundra and I am seriously considering it. It is a nice looking truck in decent condition and I think he will give me a fair deal to ensure a quick/easy sale.

Here are the details:
2016 Toyota Tundra TSS SR5 Crewmax
172,000 miles
5.7 v8
Shocks/struts, water pump, tires all replaced in the last 10k miles.

Final price hasn't been set but it sounds like it will be in the $15k-$17k range. I feel like this is a pretty solid deal but I have never had a Tundra and on the surface that is high mileage.

Any issues with these trucks i need to be aware or look for?

For a little addittional background I am looking for this to be both my daily driver and used as a weekend warrior. That might include heading to the lake, camping, or hauling loads from Home Depot. I am currently in a Subaru Outback that I would be selling if purchased. I know no one is asking but I REALLY wanted the Outback to work. It's just not comfortable and doesn't work for me. I have been planning to get back into a truck but wasn't in a hurry to make that happen. If this is a good deal I am in a financial spot where I can pull the trigger and not miss out on it.

Thanks in advance! Few pictures attached for fun.

That's a steal at that price for a 2.5 Gen in my area. I'd say do it! I know earlier model years had valley plate coolant leak issues, but I think that was just earlier years and I would assume they had it addressed by 2016. Something to look into more maybe. Tundras.com should have a buyer's guide/what to look for for that year, but for that price I'd say it's a good deal regardless.

Well, I love my ’21 SR5 DC Tundra — best vehicle I’ve had and like it better than my previous 4 Toyota’s, though they were great too.

The ‘16s were the 3rd year, IIRC, of the 2.5 gen refresh, and I think the first year to get a 38 gal gas tank as an option (snatch that truck up if it has that!). The 5.7 V8 was intro’d in ’07 and so all the bugs are pretty much worked out. They have a slightly downrated (semi-float) 3/4 ton10.5” rear diff from Totota’s commercial trucks too. That’s a large part of why I went with a ’21 vs waiting for the 3rd gens, and I’m so happy I did. They are great platform for a build.

Payload and MPG aren’t great, but you know that. Turning radius is — a big bonus on the trail, as is the frame flex for articulation. The famous million mile Tundra was a 2007 2 gen, so there is that. If it’s in good shape and you like the truck, I wouldn’t let the mileage spook you. I found https://www.carcomplaints.com/ to be very helpful when I was researching trucks in ’19, ’20 — you can look up by model year. And, hey, it’s made in San Antonio, my old stompin’ grounds so there is that too! Good luck with whatever you decide.

You all have backed up what I have read other places. Going to take it for a spin tomorrow. Who knows…. Definitely may come home with me.

Took it out for a spin this afternoon. Absolutely loved it. I’m going to sleep on it but am 99% a deal will be made not it in the next day or two.

@dstefan, it does indeed have the 38 gallon fuel tank!!!
