After Amicalola: Reflections & Photos

I must be really easy to entertain this morning. I read the "Midland 1001Z 2-Way CB Radio" and immediately thought, yep, don't want a one-way CB radio.

Haha, I've thought that before as well, but apparently I'm not awake enough to contemplate those types of things yet.

Bill - would love to do a 3 day thing at some point, but looks like I'm triple booked that Saturday. There's a horse auction in Buckhead (the actual city, not North Atlanta) we were planning on going to, a social networking convention thing in Kennesaw I was going to try and make, and I've got a Libertarian Party planning meeting late that afternoon. :-(

All,

Sorry for diverting the thread with the cell phone/CB stuff. My bad. On the other hand, now I feel less alone for not having a radio in the truck last week. The nice thing about seeing other rides in person is that you get some choice ideas for your own truck.

Hey zolo, when you get a chance PM me or post what you have done to your suspension. Even though our brief SAR night ride got cut short, the experience of Marley on the stereo, a working heater, no weird drafts, and the sensation of busting *ss along the trail without it sounding like I was in a run-away chuckwagon made quite an impression. I am on fire to start tweaking my Nismo. Really liked the looks of your front coilover set-up.

Also, where can I find the famous river run-gone-bad video?

I only took a few photos this trip (unlike normal) and you can find all of them here. Guess I was being lazy. Here's a few.

Pat, meant to ask on the trip. Your wheel width looks wider than 'normal' for a 404. Yeah, I know you have the fenders off but the wheels look offset to the outside. Are they? Your 404 sure looks and performs great!!

It must be an optical delusion. :sombrero: I am pretty sure they are the standard 9" Süd rims. Maybe with the fenders off and the 12.5s that makes the difference? I have always known that I wanted a rig like your 1300 but after seeing yours last weekend I now know I gotta have one. It won't be anytime soon, but a boy can dream, can't I?

For a trail vehicle, that's an "obstacle illusion" :sombrero: Yep, must be the combination of no fenders and larger tires, but it sure looks great. Concerning the U-1300, keep planning and you will get there. I saw my first Unimog in use on non-roads while working in the Oriente of Ecuador in 1979, knew I'd get one eventually, and finally bought a 404 twenty years later. Ten years after that I got the U-1300. It was just this past August we found the 'right' camper. It took half a lifetime to pull the plan together. Dang, I'm getting old.

After seeing all the neat vehicles out there this past weekend, I realize I could have easily been distracted. I certainly like the Rovers.

They all have their unique strengths, don't they?

Did you notice a small semi-circle of grown men genuflecting before your more-than-ample winch?

Ha, ha, no I missed that. That winch has done some serious work since I got it and I am well satisfied with it also. When I go out by myself the winch provides great peace of mind. Even with other vehicles, it's a requirement due to the trucks weight of 14,000 lbs, with the camper. Mud and "stuck" takes on a serious meaning with that weight.

Back to the other vehicles, on the way through Madisonville, TN, there was an older long wheelbase Land Rover truck, bright red, sitting in the front row of cars at a gas station, possibly for sale. It sure was 'purdy'.
