Alvord and Steens 2010

I sketched out a kind of spur of the moment plan to hit the Alvord desert for the peak of the Perseid meteor shower on August 12th. After a day there we would head up into the overshadowing Steens mountains until the 15th and then return home My thought was that this would give my daughter one more trip out this summer before heading back to school, and also she has been begging me to let her drive, and what better place is there for a 12 year old to learn?

I had asked if David Ramirez (DaveRami) and his wife would like to join since we've been trying to come together on some trips, since they only live 70 or so miles away. And as luck would have it they were able to join us at least for one day in the Steens mountains

Wednesday came with news that my friend Scott who is living with us but travels most of the time, would be coming home that evening and would like to join us as well. GREAT!! Only one problem, space was already filling up fast and I did not want to take our trailer. So it was decided that we'd try our best to pack light like backpackers to get all our gear in the 4runner sans the trailer.
With a little cramming here and a little jamming there, we got it all to fit.
200+lbs in the Thule MOAB basket on top, 100lb German Shepherd in the back along with about 150lbs more of our gear, and we were set to jet.

The traveling was slow but uneventful and I swear that someone stretched Hwy 140 to Denio, NV an extra 65 miles.

Along the way we did meet these weary travelers. It looked like they'd been on the trail a loooong time, and weren't much for talking.

About six and a half hours into our trip we reached Fields, OR and topped off the tank. I was greatly surprised to be averaging nearly 19mpg the whole way there.
After the top off we hit the road for a few miles out of town and came to our destination, The Alvord Desert.

We pulled off some chairs had a beer and wandered a bit by foot to investigate what appeared to be a very wet surface in some places.

It wasn't wet but shiny, and after finding that the bugs liked the grassy area as much as we did, we moved out further out onto the playa.
It was already to decided that we'd sleep with our pads on the ground to enjoy the full view of the brilliant night sky.

Unfortunately I don't have a camera that can capture the evening sky, but I did get the moon setting and I rose early and did my best to capture the early light.

The meteor shower and the rest of the night sky was pretty intense and was best from about midnight to 3am.

But the early light of dawn was every bit as beautiful and took on a magical/spiritual feel for me. It was hard to take it all in.

The chill of the morning plus the fact that I didn't pack a jacket, had me pleading with the sun to rise. So AJ and I played a game of frisbee to get the blood circulating.

After the sun came up, so did the rest of the gang and after breakfast we packed up and headed for the Steens. We took the south end of the Steens loop and the Rooster Comb road to the top. The warning signs of this road make it seem worse than it really is. I'm sure an Outback could do it fine with an attentive driver. But the road is rough and steep and I was glad to have my OME suspension to handle the added weight of the 4runner and cushion the blows from the rocks in the road. Without it I'm sure I would have been riding the bump stops all the way to the top.

We headed down the northwest side of the Steens towards our campsite at Fish Lake campground which as it's name implies, has a small lake to cool off or rinse off the days dust.

After setting up camp and having lunch, we took a little drive back up to the top to check out the viewpoints.

The next day was spent hanging around camp wishing we'd brought better food. So we took a little drive into Frenchglen for superb burgers and pie and then some expensive gas from a rude attendant who'd obviously preferred we'd not patronized her establishment.

Early in the evening David showed up with his wife Cheryl (I hope I spelled her name correctly). We shared some stories and laughs and then we separated for our prospective meals. After eating some steak of questionable quality and age, we opted for a package of Mountain House spaghetti.
Meanwhile Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez presented what we should all be so lucky to eat while camping. It was like a personal chef :chef: had come along with them.
No dog nor man could keep from eyeballing their food.

We had a nice time with them but in the morning it was time for us to pack up and hit the road for home. We decided to take the 50 mile gravel road from 205 through the Hart Mountain Antelope refuge.

We stopped to catch this guy with his girls.

From here on it was a tiresome drive home but the memories of our trip kept me smiling and awake yet dreaming of our next adventure.

September is a great time to be there because there are less bugs active, but the weather can be a little iffy in the Steens.

Some sort of lost...
Beautiful! That area is one of my favorites. It is so easy to get out there and be miles away from anyone or anything, complete peace and quiet, and lots of hot springs out there. There are some beautiful sunrises and sunsets as well.

Looks like the dog forgot to put on his photo face!! LOL!!

Thanks for the info on the weather in September. I had planned on sleeping in the ZJ but I'll take an extra feather comforter.

I'll be sure to post when done.
