Am I crazy? G-wagen to LR4

They are different vehicles, much in the same way an LR4 is different from a Defender. The G-Wagon is a heavy, overbuilt military vehicle that has been lightly adapted to commercial and civilian use. It is better than an LR4 or MKIII in some ways and not as good in others. Having done remote, solo travel in Africa with G-Wagons, I appreciate its strengths. It is a world-class exploration platform.

Yeah, but the one you drove there isn't the one you can buy here. I'm talking about the US pimp my ride version.

What substantial differences do you think there are between the pimp my ride vs stripped out version, in terms of capability?

We get the more problematic V8 and the numerous secondary and tertiary systems no one needs, i.e heated bull****, navigation, 35 different airbags, chrome badging, "special paint", 19" "special" wheels, suede headliner, etc etc.

It's such a delicious, hideous irony that the country with the greatest access to cheap fuel gets the least robust version of every 4x4 available.

Not sure i agree. I came close to buying a used G500 earlier this year. Didn't find it to have much of anything extra that would be different from any modern car. Sure, it may have a heated seats and could have lots of custom stuff but only if you buy that option package. And lots of airbags are a must for me if I buy something new. After all, you are only going to get a chance to die of a car accident on the way to the trailhead. I want those airbags.

Stripper trucks are great but as someone who learned to drive in a LR Series II 109, owns a stripper FJ60 and Gen 2 4Runner (both since new), I really appreciate the modern touches that add up to a much safer vehicle.

I ended up not buying anything new. I decided my FJ100 was good enough for now. Oh yeah, it is a 98 - the stripper version.
