I've struggled with the same questions. Having a 2002 crewcab longbed F350 with f/r locker and the kinks worked out, it still made sense to keep that as a truck and buy the 4x4 ambulance over anything else. Biggest reasons:
- compartments: Ambulance is like an RV with lots of storage compartments, keep your camping gear packed up ready to go
- Inside: Just sleeping on the floor with a pad is still better than figuring out what to do with the truck if it rains or is really damp or just cold or urban side of the road camping.

I personally have an extended 2009 E350 van that I love. I have three other vehicles I can drive, yet I would rather take this as my daily driver. Mine is 2wd (Camburg long travel kit) and it works great. It isnt a rock crawler, but that isnt what I intend to use it for. I wanted something comfortable that I can do some road trips and dry camping out of.
