Ambulance Camper/ Expedition Rig Conversion FAQ

Not sure on the backspace/offset technicalities, but the tires fell where I expected based on my less than accurate measurements of the front hubs and rim choice based on those measurements. I estimated about a 4.5" difference per side between the DRW and SRW hubs.

As long as it ends up where you want it that's all that matters.

Are both your units mini-mods?

I need some help understanding wiring on my ambulance. Has door switches that will turn the interior lights on when the rear doors are open. I decided I wanted to removed that switch and put in a manual switch so I can have them on and off as I please. (there is a switch for that on the control board in the rear but nothing seems to work, relay clicks but no lights. Bulbs are good)

Anyways I removed the plunger switch from the door and it has three wires. One will ohm out when grounding to the body, one seems to be neutral, and the last is always hot. I attached a rocker switch with three posts and the lights dont work? Not sure how its wired and I am confused.

1) most circuits are wired to turn on when grounded.

2) your lights should turn off when the plunger is pulled all the way out (Crestline do, and most funcion the same).

3) stock control switches by CPR seat should allow you to turn lights on and off at will when ambulance is powered on.

Year/model/manufacturer/class?

Yup the plunger switch would turn the lights on when pulled out. I just dont have enough knowlege to know how to re wire it to come on when grounded I guess. Its a 1995 E350 Van with a McCoy Miller build.
For some reason the stock control switches in the rear will not turn the lights on. No idea why, they work when the door is open. I pulled the back of the panel off and everything looked as it should at least.

Do you have a panel in the cab with a switch that's labeled "Master"? In my case if that switch is not on the panel in the rear will not function

I had some problems with my rear control panel that turned out to be a bad ground. My problem was not just limited to lights. The whole panel was acting flakey.

Yeah even with the master on they still wont work. About the only thing that will work off that panel is the switch for the rear heat and AC. Nothing else works on it.

I chose to kill part of this feature as well. No point sneaking out of bed to pee in the middle of the night just to blast all the interior lights and wake up the girlfriend.

Mine was also a little funny. The rear doors will activate the entire "Rear Load" light circuit which is the reverse lights and rear scene lights on both sides, and activate all the interior overhead lights. The side door only activated the stairwell lights, red side door hazard flashing light, and the driver side overhead lights.

The side door circuit worked at all times the master kill switch at the driver seat was active. The rear door circuit was dependent on the Modular Disconnect being active.

When I have the time I will probably go back and give the cab and box door switches an independent always hot circuit from the house batteries. Any time I open a door the stairwell lights and under-body LEDs will kick on.

That was my thought as well! Every time I go out at night all the lights are on....Plus I cant keep them on when the door is closed. My guess is I must be hooking the wires up wrong into the switch and not causing them to work. Seemed simple enough, just relocate the switch to the door and change the switch.

Only half my lights come on as well, never checked to see if they come on any differently when the rear doors are open. Will need to go check that I guess.

My rear originally only worked when the rig was running and master was on. The oil pressure sender (engine running) stopped working, and I changed it so the circuit came on with the master (running or not). This main relay is likely why you've not got power... It must be both grounded and turned on by master.

I figured out the light issue. All good there. Still no idea why the rear panel doesn't really work. Where is the main power relay most likely?
