An expedition truck on portals...

Well, all images are on my photo site and can be bought as hi-res download or prints.
Have a look if you find something there: http://rallyewerk.photoshelter.com

When I am back from the road next week I will add another US printer to the site.

Most images are tagged, so you´ll have a good chance of finding what you look for with the search option (e.g. "Mercedes", "Land Rover", "Unimog", "Breslau", ....)

It took me a while to get that started but now I am constantly uploading my images to the database and have few friends and colleagues who are also sharing their images.
I am also constantly looking for more images and photographers who´d like to join.

Yup, defiantly need a calendar, cause I can't pick which ones I want. :)

Sweet mother of pearl, you take some good photo's (hope its ok to link, it's watermarked after all)

What you need, is an engine that you can pick 12 photo's from the site, and it auto-generates a calendar, and viola!

Yeah, that´s exactly what I have been looking for and have now suggested to the guys at Photoshelter.
It should be doable through their network of really good US print labs.

I hate editing and sorting images and with this new agency of mine I just upload and move on.:ylsmoke:

I like it. Well let us know when its up and ready, and I'll be ordering a calender for sure. It can go right beside my Unimog one :wings:

Hi,

well there are a few things I don´t like about the TD4 "Puma"
- not enough torque
- to high revs
- fuel efficiency (even though I am currently an average of 0.6l/100km lower than what was specified for a new Defender with the 2.4l engine)

I was never a friend of small engines either and the way manufacturers are downsizing isn´t what´s needed in an off road capable truck if you also want to tow a trailer.

Sometime last summer I had put that plan of swapping the engine on the back burner as I could´t get hold of a factory new FORD 3.2 Tdci and the other engine I had in mind wasn´t anywhere near market introduction (which it still isn´t, sadly, even though the prototypes ran great).

Then I trailered the Porsche 911 Safari of Eric Brandenburg all the way from Hamburg to the Nador (Morocco) and back for the Africa Eco Race 2012 and kept cursing at that bloody 2.4l Puma.

I have now found two pretty good engines that´ll nicely fit the Defender and am now working down the list to see if all the parts I need are available and at what cost.
For the project it´s also important that the engine, apart from having more more power and torque, can take some abuse and will match modern emission standards.

Thanx Phil

I know about them as I sort of brought it up during a show 2 years ago when I mentioned to Andy that the 5-cyl. Ford Tdci would be just the right engine for the Defender and he said he´d look into that.
He did and succeeded ;-)

I guess I´ll know more about the engine in about 3 weeks and hopefully also have a quote for the new gearbox that I would like to fit a the same time.

My new wheels are nowhere in sight either....it can be such a nerve cracking thing trying to have a decent conversation with a company like Hutchinson.
The keep asking about "which car do you need the wheels for", upon which I keep telling them that I am only interested in offset, dimensions and load rating, as I can fit any light truck wheel they make. They don´t understand .....

So long, as I have to finish my calendar for 2013.

Robert, would you be interested in having someone in the USA help with your Hutchinson's?

That's great, I didnt want you spending hard earned money on starting a conversion that someone else had already done the hardest work on...
That it was you who had put the idea in their heads didnt occur to me!
Good luck with whatever option you choose...

Hi Jeremy,

sure I would!
Over here (the old side of the Atlantic) it seems like everybody is in some sort of "relationship" with the other and it´s difficult to find someone with an open mind.

I have been running the Mercedes G wheels from Hutchinson (WA-0492) which has an offset of 63mm.

My requirements would be a double headlock wheel with:

a) 17 x 8.5"
b) 3000lbs (1.500kg) min. load capacity
c) 84mm centre bore (would be nice but my tyre inflation system manifold could be modified, too)
d) bolt pattern of 150mm or more, e.g. 5H-150mm or 5H-165,1mm (I can run any bolt pattern on my portals as I can easily swap the lower flange)

Thanx,

Robert

Thanx Phil!

As said there´s only two engine options that would make sense and it´ll all come down to the parameters that I outline:

- cost to install, run and maintain
- durabilty
- bhp and torque
- fuel consumption and ecological footprint (even though I hate that word)
