An incident worth talking about. Kinetic Recovery Accident.

Im doing some recovery gear purchases getting ready for our OEV HBE build and watched the video.
Ive done a few sketchy winches but Im far from an expert. Heres where I shook my head with this guy.

He’s an “expert”, teaches, is a trail guide etc and wheels every week “all over the US”

A self proclaimed guy like this uses a cheap no name amazon soft shackle and puts it through the clevis mount - really? Then, no weight blanket or floor mat on the rope - that would have set him back 8 seconds at least.

Then he keeps lip flapping about every second counts, lol like an avalanche was about to hit the trail, but he took the time to set up his drone to film the deal.

The only thing I learned is there are more azzhats and posers out there than you realize and dont let any of them manage your recovery

Interesting video and good points by all.

In a previous life as an industrial mechanic, I availed myself of as much rigging training as possible. The big takeaways from every class I've ever attended are as follows:

1- Always ensure the WLL of your equipment is sufficient for the lift/pull.
2- Inspect the entire system for sharp edges/possible failure points, and for proper rigging.
3- SLOW DOWN! Production, etc. can wait; nothing is worth a life.
4- Avoid shock loads at all costs; these are what result in equipment failure.

A pause at any one of these points would likely have resulted in a much less dramatic recovery...

Lots of good feedback about what and why it happened, and how it could have been prevented. Here’s a comment from a different perspective. I can personally vouch for emergency room wait times. I nearly lost my right eye, went to the ER early in the evening and had to wait until 3:30 a.m. the next morning for all the people handcuffed to gurneys to be treated. Calibrate your expectations accordingly.
