An off-slab encounter

Observer
My nephew is a true adventurer having cycled across Australia, cycled numerous Moab trips and motorcycled the continental divide, to name a few. This week he was on gravel in the southeast region of BC and had this encounter:

"Rode the gravel this week and met a lady tagging hummingbirds. To our delight we spent a couple of hours helping her and got to trap & weigh humming birds while she banded them. This is a Calliope hummingbird that weighed a huge 2.7 gms. She puts a net trap around a feeder and then you drop the net with fish line. Then she wraps the bird in a blanket to band it. You don't get to see this on the #1 highway."

Nice picture! that is a once in a lifetime experience for sure! We have lots of hummingbirds around here and feeders for them, but getting within 5-10 feet of one is next to impossible, not to mention holding one!
