Ancient Warn 8274 - What can I expect to fix?

I got the Jeep back from the body shop yesterday. The damage from the deer strike has been repaired, and in lieu of replacing the bent OEM bumper with another OEM unit, they installed the Warn unit I ordered from Quadratec. Now I just need to get that 8274 cleaned up, re-habbed and mounted...

something interesting with your 8274 is send an email to WARN with your serial number on it, they can tell you when it was built. i have a couple 8274's and one is from 1978 and still going strong. also a hint if your motor is weak see about getting it rewound instead of replaced, might be cheaper depending on your local shop, and if they are any good they can boost the power from it by changing the wind. if your solenoids are gone you can buy cheaper replacements then WARNs'. go to a truck shop and match it up with some other 12volt continuous duty solenoids. they look exactly the same as WARN but dont have the WARN name so cost about 1/4 the price...probably made in the same place (sorry WARN but your solenoids are way over priced).

cheers

+1

the date codes are also out there on the interwebs but I didn't bookmark the site after I looked up mine, which is two years older than the FJ40 it is now on. :sombrero:

Thought about doing that, but ended up buying a new 6hp Warn motor from the 9.5XP winch. $300 but a direct bolt-in replacement for a 300% increase in hp. :Wow1:

i actually cheaped out and went with the 4.hp db electrical motor on mine and havent had any complaints yet other than the ground is the tiny bolt that runs through the motor into the housing. it works, but i dont trust it so im goin to weld a large stud on the motor housing for extra insurance

I actually ran one of those before I replaced it with the 9.5XP motor. It worked fine for 6 months / two wheeling trips and then in started working intermittently, then stopped working altogether. Replaced the whole solenoid pack (didn't fix the problem) and then tore down the DB Electrical motor and found this:

Armature copper worn/burned completely off! No wonder it quit working. Chinese quality control lacking in this instance.

i just wanted to elaborate a little on my post, i dont want WARN to think i'm ragging on them. I have 3 offoraders and all have WARN winches and i wont run anything else. I do not recomend in any way cheaping out for the imported parts. I got a motor rewound locally buy a "good" shop and it is amazing but i would not buy the cheap warn copy, if your ever out alone and must depend on your winch you dont want copy parts. as far as the solenoids go, i havent found a differance between the WARN ones and the ones i get at my local truck shop for alot less money but i do carry a couple spares with me all the time and here is a hint, learn how to hotwire your winch incase you do have a solenoid failure.

i did not know about putting the 9.5xp motor on the 8274 but might do that next time i change a motor. great info.

cheers

I like the combination of new Jeep sheetmetal and a classic Warn 8274. Any competant alternator/starter rebuilder should be able to re-wind that motor if it gives you trouble.
