I love to see people who think outside the box with their vehicles. :smiley_drive: I'm looking forward to the build. Whats your timeline?

Not that it matters, but shouldn't a 1969 be 1600 cc?

1967 was 1500 cc, then in 1968 up to 1600 cc (if my memory from 30 years ago is right).

Looking forward to the Baja Bug :)

Type I's didn't get 1600cc engines until '70. Mine has the H5 block which is correct for that year.

Beetle possibilities ...

1/. Early Type 2 ('Kombi') reduction boxes, for increased height and lower gearing.
2/. 4 wheel drive as per 'schwimwagen'. (i.e. reduction boxes in front as well.)
3/. Early fabric sun roof.
4/. Remove front passenger seat.

You will have a ... 'Kommanderwagen'! :victory:

You gonna race class 11?

Not with this one. My buddy and I are considering that for a different bug.

This is just a fun project for my daughters and me. They need to learn to drive a stick.

How I ended up with this thing was: My buddy has a '69 that has been in his family since new. It got rear ended and he bought this '69 for body parts. I am ending up with a running, drivable chassis with a clear title, no fenders, bumpers or engine cover.

Keep it simple. For the rear reinforce the rear trailing arms with a boxing kit, change the CV joints to Type 2 or Type 4 ( Type 4 having more degrees capability) You will have to change output flanges on the trans and also the stub axles but either is no big deal. Add a GOOD shock. Weld up the seams on the rear frame horns put in good transmission mounts with a strap kit. Fab up a skid plate and rear bumper. You will need a simple roll cage to tie the rear shocks into.
For the front weld up all the seams on the BJ front end, replace the balljoints with good ball joints add Class 11 shocks( fox, bilstein, etc,) reinforce (sleeve) the tie rods, or replace with HD, replace tie rod ends with stock, aftermarket Ford or International or hiems, set up a hook and rod set up for travel stops, reinforce the steering arms, put a shim between the pitman arm and the bottom of the steering box, leaving approx. .015 interference. Remove front sway bar. Fab up a skid plate and bumper.

Buy the book Baja Bugs and Buggies by Jeff Hibbard. A bit dated but full of tips on building simple bajas and buggies.

You will be amazed at where a simple baja can go:Wow1:

Class 11 requires full front & rear aprons, full fenders. Essentially an unmodified stock bug.

That's why this one won't work for that. We are looking for a 71 or 72 do make an 11 car out of. Bigger engine, dp, etc. After that, we may make a 5/1600 out of whatever is left.

I picked up a used fiberglass wide eye front end. I just need to find some good used rear fenders, the little engine cover, an exhaust, engine cage, and some decent wheels.
