Another Flatbed thread.

Long time lurker on here, and other sites. Here is my dilemma and I value your experience and insights.

I want a T.C., but never having owned one I'm not exactly sure what I want or need.

Here is what I do know. I love to explore. I live in MT. and hunt and fish here and in ID., but want to do a lot more. I love to take a fire road and just see where it goes. I'm not a big four wheeler type. Never done any of the tough stuff. I will be traveling either alone and two bird dogs, or possibly one other adult.

Bottom line: I have been looking into campers and really like the flatbed idea, but, and it is a big but, if I spend the money to go that route and decide I don't like it, now I have to sell it and start over. Could be very expensive. So, here is my latest idea. I talk to a local guy who would build me a custom flatbed and two boxes to add storage and support to the camper for about $6000. Then I buy a used pop-up and be into the whole thing for less than new.

My thought is that, while not having the extra floor space, if I don't like that particular camper, I can switch to another. If I do, I can sell the boxes and have a flatbed model built.

What say ye?

Oh and Hi.

You might consider just finding an older, used popup camper that you kinda like, try a few trips in it and start a list of likes and dislikes. I agree that a flatbed offers superior space utilization, but as you say, it would be a pretty big commitment. Everyone has different tastes and priorities, you can probably solidify your needs in a $3000 camper, keep your money together and make your decision from experience. This could be done with an ordinary pickup up with a stock box.

Yeah I gotta agree, I can't figure out the logic of paying $6 for a flatbed with boxes only to try out a normal slide in camper and then have to modify the flatbed again if you want a flatbed camper. Assuming your truck has normal truck box on it right now try out the camper and go from there.
