Update
We wound up staying in Baja between San Jose del Cabo and San Lucas for 1.5 years! Surfing and fishing everyday and making local friends in the water, and beach. It was too good of a life to leave...
But then one day we started noticing some strange things happening, like weird burns on my arm from "something" in the water, dead sea creatures washing onshore, and a lot of trash(broken up plastic, styrofoam, and just weird things). We finally decided to investigate and everything pointed to Fukushima... Being in a 3rd world country and "tourist zone" we decided that they are not going to tell you "don't go in the water" and in fact, we found out most people had never even heard of the tsunami and chain of events at Fukushima leading to contamination and fish with radioactive elements turning up all the way up and down the coast of Pacific Ocean!
The weirdness got weirder, and finally I had to pull the plug on Baja. At the same time the economy in the USA hit a low-point (December 2012), which depending how you look at it and your financial situation is, could also mean a good time to buy if you can stomach the idea of temporarily relocating back north of the border, from Paradise!
So, I got in contact with the sellers on my dream home near Ojo Caliente N.M., and Taos, N.M. that I was interested in.
I had been watching the Landcruiser sit all this time we spent walking to the beach everyday, and slowly bits of rust started showing up, which killed me to see. I found a buyer for the truck in Vermont, and drove up to Albq. From San Jose to meet him and sell my beloved diesel Cruiser, ugh.
Things went as planned, I found a replacement vehicle 4x4, and also made time to go see the house I had been eyeing, (now on the market for 888 days) and the price slowly dropping over $87,000 from its original asking price!
Knowing I can return to Mexico and Oaxaca when I desire, so we decided to splurge and make an offer on our dream home on 5 acres while the economy and interest rates were at their lowest ever, good for some, bad for others. The Rio Grande, Rio Chama, and Rio Ojo Caliente are VERY close for fishing, and Abiquiu Lake is also nearby for SUP adventures, plus the rivers.
Long story shortened, we bought the 3 bedroom Adobe with separate 3 car garage, and separate workshop/compound for less monthly than I had been paying for rent in Colorado!
So now, we have been in Northern N.Mexico since December 31, 2012 planning, and acquiring things...
I had picked up an XR650R street legal dual sport bike, and since then have bought a 1996 Ducati 900 SS/SP WITH 20k miles, AND a BMW R100GS with 20k miles!
So, we love where we landed, quite unexpectedly & have great Native American friends here, and a garage full of new Expedition Vehicles.
I have now started planning another trip south on the R100GS to Copper Canyon and beyond to see about the land we found in Oaxaca near Puerto Escondido, and today having a real "home base" with a workshop, we plan to split our time between home and Oaxaca, Mexico!
The trip ended in a way I never expected, and with some huge changes, but for us, all the better! We have safe storage, 5 acres, and a beautiful home, where we garden, store rainwater, have a private well, and a gate we can lock, plus mountain views. Oh yeah, the Ojo Caliente Hot Springs are just up the road 6 miles, which is wonderful!
The situation in the USA is no better than before, but now we ignore what we chose, and take things in a different light, knowing we can stay or go, as we chose.
So, with no regrets, as we are young, are planning now for the Oaxaca land deal, and the tropical oasis we have wanted. Funny how things change, and if you can adapt to change, new opportunities arise from out of nowhere.
